SX50 already has an electronic level. Read manual...
It is really awkward not to have hot shoe cover. I bet only 2-3% users of bridge cameras use (pro) external flash...

I want something to cover it. I wonder if the cover on the SX40 will fit.
2nd one definitely sharper. At such an extreme zoom level/low ISO rating, in my experience, you have to have an ultra steady hand/tripod, high shutter and good lighting to make it work.

Available light from 60watt bug light,Tough locking focus but looks like SX50 nailed it when locked. Compared to my Sony A55 w 18-250 lens had about same success rate.
No PP handheld
Hot shoes are pretty standard size, probably even across camera brands. If you have a cover from another camera, give it a try. I'm assuming you are talking about the little slide-on piece to cover the contacts.
