Preorder XE1 kit or body only?
Sep 26, 2012

I've seen a lot of posts about XE1 preorders and I'm wondering, are people preordering the kit or the body only? I can't decide what to do. If I get the body only ill probably get then 35mm lens and then the 23mm when it comes out. But my other thought is to get the kit and then the 23mm and maybe the 32mm Zeiss when it comes out. Thoughts?

The kit zoom with its bundled discount is a bargain, and you'll almost certainly be able to recoup its price if you decide you don't want it, and just use primes instead. So to me it's a no-brainer, especially if you have no other lenses in the meantime.

Choice of primes is a very individual matter. Frankly the 23mm and 14mm (or the Zeiss 12mm) hold the most interest, followed by a longer lens for portraits (maybe the 60mm, maybe a manual focus SLR lens with an adapter). The 32mm and 35mm hold no real interest for me, personally.

It's a much better deal to get the X-E1 zoom kit. I also prefer primes, but this zoom with IS and an f2.8-4 aperture range looks very nice. At least here in the States, the zoom is $699 alone. With the kit being $1399, that means you are essentially getting the body for $700, and superb deal.

I am totally torn between the better VF for the X-Pro1 and the smaller and less expensive X-E1 kit. And one of the main reasons I'm interested in the X-E1 is that, even though the 35 1.4 is a certain buy, the zoom is interesting for it's wide end (18mm) and step-less design which should make it the fastest focussing X lens yet. Practically the only reason I'm thinking of waiting for the X-E1 and not getting an X-Pro1 now (even though I'm 95% convinced I'd be happier with an OVF) is I don't want to have to pay $699 for the zoom later on. Make sense?

Anyway, you could get the kit, and if you find the zoom replaces the 18 f2 you're all set. If for some reason the zoom doesn't suit you, you'll have no problem selling it. Good luck.

I have the X Pro 1 now with the 35mm and I purchased the kit with the 18-55 because it was a good deal bundled like that.

In any event, I think it is really hard to plan lenses at this time because the system is still in its infancy and there are so few available. For instance, I do not plan to keep the 35mm or the 18-55mm in the long run, but if I didn't have them, I wouldn't be able to use my X-cams at all.

It all comes down to what you shoot.

I use a lot of UWA, so I will stick with my E-M5 with the 7-14 for that until Fuji releases their 10-24.

I shoot at 35mm (ff equiv) a lot, so I'll stick with the X100 for that until Fuji releases the 23mm.

I like 85mm a lot, so I stick to the E-M5 with the 45mm 1.8 until Fuji releases the 56mm.

And beyond that I use the Olympus 75mm 1.8 and the 75-300 on the E-M5 until Fuji releases the 55-200.

The nice thing about the 18-55 though is that I will get my 35mm and 85mm soon enough, just without the speed of the primes.

I ordered mine with the kit lens. I plan on buying a couple of primes, but there are certain kinds of photographic excursions where I prefer a zoom. It looks like Fuji has made a rather nice one.

$400 for a useful zoom with Fuji quality is a good deal IMO.

One reason I'm considering the XE1 with the kit lens is that I think it will make a good combination as a travel camera. I will probably be placing an order for one soon with the kit lens and then add a lens or two in the near future.

Definitely kit and no other lens.

I've got plenty of legacy lenses, M-mount, Nikkors, Oly, Pentax and others to take care of every shootin' situation I could think of.
Lucky me,I guess.

Get the kit, you can easily sell the lens for the price difference or little extra to xpro1 users. I would for example gladly buy the zoom lens for the price difference.

If you want zoom then ep1+zoom is way to go, if don't look at the discounts on xpro1, it is sold now for great discount.

I also went for the kit lens (see my post here: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1020&message=42576199 )

The saving is too good to pass. I would have not bought the zoom lens at full price.

I personally am looking at the X-E1 and the 23mm but doubt will be sold together as a kit
