Extreme details - jpeg out of A99
Sep 25, 2012

Just came back from “Sony Alpha Preview Night” at Sony's Vancouver Headquarter. Sony arranged a pro fashion photog and a model on site, with some studio lighting setup for us to try out A99. I still don't have a firm grasp of AF-D but the keeper rate seems very high. I got some real sharp images out of their pre-production A99. For comparison I also took some shots with my own A900, 135ZA prime lens was used on both cameras. Extra Fine jpeg for A99, RAW for A900. A99 seems to produce sharper image than A900.

Well that stands to reason if you haven't sharpened the raw files.......which you will have to do to print them and maybe you will also have to convert to JPEG or TIFF .......hang on, but these are JPEGS otherwise I would not be able to see them.

Thanks for the explanation. A900's RAW files are managed in Aperture 3, and directly exported to low-res jpeg in order to fit web resolution.

You could have shot jpg, too, on the A900. Color profiles are easier to compare then.

Still, I agree, the A99 looks sharper and the jpg very pleasing to the eye. Well done, Sony. Thanks, Sonyshooter.

My A900 in RAW is a lot of sharper that the samples you are showing here with your A900.

Thanks very much for the share! 99 looks just sharper, especially the skin above nose % bow.

Thanks for posting, nice pictures and very sharp.

Apparently without any negative impact of the slt-mirror on the sharpness.

Keep in mind, sharpness is usually not what you want in that type of portrait photography. Having gotten that opinion out of the way, the posted images do indeed look very sharp and detailed from what I can see.

These samples look encoraging. They look sharp with beautiful skin tones. Pleasure to see beautiful face of model as well.

Would be sill from Sony to not improve IQ pulled from 24 megapixels sensor compare to A900.

A900 IQ on other hand, keeps well againds new A99.
--

Person is taking photos, not camera. When photograph is bad, it's because photographer doesn't know how to choose settings optimal to "own preferences". Then blames camera for bad IQ.
This is same as blaming car about arriving to wrong destination.

Thank you for sharing. I had an invite to the event but couldn't make it. I am curious who the pro fashion photo was leading the event.

Cheers, Terry

I initially wondered why the A99 shots seemed darker then I realized you gave the non-SLT'd A900 an extra stop of light - ISO200.

So considering the + - 1/3 to 1/2 stop loss due to the translucent mirror I'd say the A99 held up quite well here.

Perhaps I have shaky hands holding 1/200 speed? At the same speed A99 has less vibration due to fixed mirror.

I have the exact same feeling. I think A900/850 is still very competent and OVF is a joy to use, but at the same time it's relief to see FF replacement is very capable at core image quality.

The photographer is John Bellerose ( http://www.johnbellerose.com ). He uses A850 and currently evaluating A99 as well.

Sorry my bad. I didn't set A900 to ISO100 (default to base ISO 200) while A99 has based ISO of 100. Resulting somewhat flat exposure on A900 and slight under exposure for A99.

The presenter was Courtney Hamm the Sony Alpha trainer, but photographer John Bellerose was there taking about why he shoots Sony.

http://www.johnbellerose.com

It was really cool to get pro tips from John while shooting. Also very cool to see the alpha stuff working with Elinchrom and pocket wizard stuff with zero problems.
