Wolves with 5Dmk3 at ISO 25600 and 70-200mm f2.8 mkII

Hi all,

I had a chance to vist Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem , NY. I used Canon 5DmkIII and Canon 70-200mm f2.8 mkII

It was getting very dark so I bump the ISO and used spot metering. All Photos Shot in RAW and PP in LR4.

The 1st photo is ISO 12800 and that is female Mexican Wolf. They are in danger so they breed them there and release pups to the National Parks to grow their population.

This is male, Zephyr 19months old Gray American Wolf, and it is growing to be the next Wolf Ambassador. They not in direct danger so the Wolf Conservatory does not have permission to breed those guys there. Iso 25600

This beauty is a female, Alawa and Zephyr is her twin brother, also 19months old Gray American Wolf, and also she is growing to be the next Wolf Ambassador. They not in direct danger so the Wolf Conservatory does not have permission to breed those guys there. Iso 25600

And this DANGER 99% wolf, patiently waits until I adjust the power on my strobes. The POP sound spookes her out so this is the best I could get from the quick studio setup. This is the Canadian Labrador Retriever, blind with huge love to give. That was shot with 7D and 50mm f1.4 and I was testing Radiopopers.

Beatiful pictures and beatiful animals. I specially like the last one of the wolves, with the move, it´s pretty difficult to get. Cameras don´t make the photographer but in this case, without this technology those pictures would have been impossible to get.

Bravo!

PD.- the last wolfe posing seems to be really wild!

Thank you Saturoldan,

Yes, I strongly agree, who would think 10 years ago that you will be shooting at ISO 25600 at 1/160 of the second and pulled out nice image. It is not perfect, but it is and shows Wolves in their most active time. I had a hard time focusing on that black wolf, using just center point. Not too much trouble on those bright colored wolves.
The last wolf is my girl btw
Best Greetings from CT,
Jacek

I like the first one. Seems like it may be cropped a bit though.

Great shots! It appears you were able to get inside whatever fence they had. Did you get a chance to interact with any of the wolves?

Interesting pictures. Looks like a great place to return to, perhaps in a little more light. However, I suppose the wolves are less active then, right?

Did you try playing with noise reduction in LR? Might help the first pic, although it is a nice picture anyway.

Thank you harrygilbert,

All photos were shot thru the fence. I basically put the lens on the fence opening and shot wider than I would normally do so I could clip the wires out of the frame. No interaction with wolves ;-( no touching, leaning on fence etc.

Thank you Joe,

The Wolves are in progress of changing their fur. I will be there again sometime in the Winter, when leaves will be down from trees and perhaps some snow to contrast. Pups will be bigger too and maybe more brave to get closer to humans.

One more thing for you. Thank you for posting your images. It seems that the forum became a geek forum, not the photographers forum that it once was. Too many gear talk (which I enjoy too, everything has to be said) and very few pictures to see and enjoy. Once this was different.

Thank you Saturoldan,

I like geek talk, but I like to see some photos too, to support the geek talk

It's hard for me to say which picture I like more! I love the white wolve one, amazing. Wolves are somehow like big cats, they have something special that few mammals have. And their social behaviour is unique.

Thank you for the presents! Good light, good subject and a good eye!

Thank you Bill,

The second set was taken in the Winter time, when all wolves had their fluffy winter coat and there was no leaves and most important I was there early afternoon not late evening...

This is a rare sample that shows shooting high ISO can be worthwhile. Thanks for sharing.
