Indeed, another technology marvel - but expensive for the man in the street.

Not necessarily, until I consider that about 25% of my photographs involve a focal length well over 35mm, usually 135-300mm. For those occasions, a second camera will be needed. So for those 75% of photography, this could be the "most perfect" camera and especially if the lens delivers. Remember, for the rumored price tag of RX1 with its 35mm f/2, you may be able to get Leica 35mm f/2 (then you can look for a full frame body to put it on).

Agreed!! The camera is small.
In reply to NorthwestF, Sep 10, 2012

What I want to see is effective resolution. A quality 100 to 200% crop can work wonders when using a fixed lens camera.

Timy and expensive!
In reply to NorthwestF, Sep 10, 2012

Too bad it'll be out of the price range of most people....unless they're:

1) rich and have money to blow
2) make a living doing street photography

It looks impressive, but for that price I expect them to include the external VF. It's a niche camera catered to a select group of people.

Good approximation although Sony typically uses a non-standard hotshoe so using that as a size reference is not perfect.

I don't think the width of hot shoe is different, only the connectors are.

"think" being the key word here. On the DSLR cameras, the shoe is definitely narrower. We don't know about this one, so it is not a reliable frame of reference.

Seems like Sony is making some very tactical shots at very specific niche markets. The RX100 was an excellent way of pulling in both point-and-shoot people looking for excellent image quality and SLR users looking for something smaller.

This looks like it's going after the kind of people who can and do invest in Leicas, Sigmas, and other such expensive fixed-lens cameras that have remarkable image quality and a relatively compact form factor. Definitely a market for the R1, although one that few of us can afford to be in.

...I.... just.... I mean...
In reply to Ryan Williams, Sep 10, 2012

I just cant answer these questions.

  • Why should i worry about the "size - pocketability " If i enjoy using my full frame (its anyway small but not light !)

  • If i am able to have it those size, why would not have ability to change lenses ( some more mm angles for better portaits, or wider ones, even tilt.shift ones---!!)

  • If i would pay this much, why would i end up with something , that i never could upgrade its hardware ?

sony usually does good things, no question. This time, they also have done something very good as well, but evoluatiion part is not a success story. Causes too much questions that starts with "If..." or "why would not... "

They might think

"They had complained about Fujifilm x100 ´s price first, then they pay a grand. They were complainig about the leica X1 & X2 but they still payed 1,5 grand ! Now we offer "something" and the price tag would be this..."

Well, i dont believe that masses would accept it as before...

Sorry to be pesimist

Ben

"Think" was the premise of your argument. What if I presented actual numbers from collection of lenses?

Why do people believe...
In reply to Ben O Connor, Sep 10, 2012

... that Sony is targeting FF DSLR market with this? Isn't that A99's job?

RX1's appeal will be limited. I can bet Sony knows that. I can bet, sports car manufacturers also know that, compared to Toyota Camry's of the world, that is.
