You should be comparing G1x to something like Sony NEX 5n, they are the same size-wise and their sensors are of similar size.

RX100's sensor is not just smaller, it is less than half of the area of G1x sensor, as can clearly be seen in the chart on this site in RX100 preview:

okay...

but while you're at it, want to compare the G1x to a full frame camera which has bigger sensors and see which come out on top? Rx-100 is truly pocketable btw. G1x is not. different market

are some people really that st*pid around here?

Hard to judge high iso performance under studio lighting. More interesting to see how they perform in low light situations, which is what high iso is meant for...

The RX100 has a much faster lens. So for real life use, you should compare the Canon ISO6400 to Sonys ISO3200.

If the G1X didn't have more detail at iso3200 I would be very surprised because it has a much larger sensor. For someone who doesn't have a DSLR and if the lens zoom range is adequate the G1X is a great choice. Since I already own an A55 and A65 a camera Like the G1X doesn't interest me. Instead I am opting for the RX100 for it's smaller pocketable size.

You should have also tried to equalize the focal lengths, shutter speeds and apertures and that you did not. In other words, pick a logical mid focal length (use 35mm equivalence for both, and keep them same), keep aperture same (pick f/5.6 for both), keep shutter speeds identical, and of course, keep both at ISO 3200.

godzen, lets not talk foolish in here. Nobody will POCKET a RX100!
They might use a camera case used with belt. But nobody will pocket the RX100.

Just watch in this forum...Someone will TRY to pocket a RX100 and will drop it.
He'll ask questions in this forum about what happened and repair.

Someone will reply..."not a good idea to pocket an expesive camera (RX100), you were asking for trouble."

About 99% of RX100 owners will not pocket. They use a belt camera case.

I guess I'm part of the 1%, I don't baby my camera just because it cost a little more than other compact cameras..some people on here talk like they are afraid to get a finger print on it...:)

I think you're very wrong on this. Indeed, I'd go so far as to say that most people do pocket the RX100 — that is, after all, the main reason why many would choose it over a larger camera that would also fit in a belt case.

If it weren't the RX100's small size and it'd be fairly unremarkable as a camera. The main reason people are drawn to it is because it delivers superb quality in a camera they can truly just throw in a pocket and forget about rather than having to consciously be carrying a camera.

Of course, neither of us have actual statistics so who knows how many people pocket it. Any owners want to chime in?

Also, unless you're wearing formal trousers with shallow, silky pockets I don't see how the RX100 could possibly get dropped just from being in there. Not unless you've got crazily slippy hands, in which case you're not going to be much safer with a case.

you are joking right? the Reason I got RX100 is that it is a pocketable camera and I carry it in my pocket/pockets, just like other compact cameras, except that RX100 is smaller than my previous LX3 that I used to carry in my pocket. Other than that I have my DSLRS and also NEX-7, but none of them are pocketable.

The RX100 comes with a strap like all compact cameras, I've grown a habit over the years to also put the strap around my wrist when using a small camera, and I've never dropped any of my 30 or 40 compacts I'd gone through over the last 10 years.

Just Yesterday I put this little camera in my shorts pocket, and went out with my wife and my 3-month-old, with nothing on my shoulder, or on my belt, etc.... i placed it in my pocket and forgot about it, until I need to reach for it to take a photo of my infant:

Again....

Since you didn't respond to my post above...

Why did you not keep all settings identical in your comparison? If I were you, I would probably select:
35mm (35mm equivalent)
ISO 3200
f/5.6
1/500s

In both cameras. The only thing identical in your comparison is... ISO. For that matter, I would also do this comparison using same ISO, same focal length (35mm equivalence) and in aperture priority mode (say, f/5.6) and see if there are discrepancies in shutter speed (which may also indicate that indicated ISO 3200 on one might be different from the other).

Eliminate your variables when making such comparisons.

G1X has more detail at ISO 3200. Agreed. I've been a big fan of the Canon G line. I auditioned it before buying the RX100. If it weren't for the fact that the G1x performed so sluggishly during auto-focus I would have bought it for the larger sensor. But the Sony is much faster. That was the deciding point for me.

I don't find that either camera falls comfortably into the pocket camera profile, so size didn't count for me.

It is why I have NEX. Want to compare G1X to NEX now?

But, at least pay attention to settings used in the comparison.

That nobody will put the RX100 is merely an assumption on your part. So, let us leave it at that. However, I would either pocket it, or it fits perfectly as the third camera in my sling bag, which means, the four lenses I pick for my other two cameras could involve something other than a range covering 28-60mm. Won't that be great?

Exactly, comparing at the same iso doesn't matter when the lens is so different.
