Sony RX100 filter adapters?
Aug 17, 2012

Hello,

Wanted to see if anyone has information if Lensmate is going to be making filter adapters along the lines of canon's S90-S100 ?

For the Sony RX100?

I simply won't buy any camera let alone one, that after tax's costing me upwards of $700.00.

I'm simply amaze that companys that produce cameras aimed at the advance amature/pro don't bother and leave to 3rd partys to make after market equipment that in my view are required!

I wrote to Lensmate about a week ago asking about this. This was their response.

We have just begun machining a filter adapter system for the RX100. It will be similar to the ones we make for the Canon S100 and G12 - http://www.lensmateonline.com/store/G12QC.php

The filter size will be 49mm, large enough to stack filters and combine filters and hoods without vignetting. To get on the interested parties list, just let us know.

I wrote to Lensmate several times regarding a RX100 filter adapter and never received a response. I have trip in September and I want to use ND and CPL filters so I bought an adapter from a gentleman in Germany

It takes 52mm filters and I have a bunch in that size. According to the German Post Office tracking number he gave me, it is on its way. I'll give an update when I receive it.

That looks promising, especially if you have a selection of 52mm filters already.

Please post your impressions, and what it cost...

That's great news especially since I'm standardized on the 49mm filter thread (Pentax primes).

How would the ND affect the RX100 in a layman's explanation? I hear it mentioned a lot and it seems strange something apparently so popular was left out of the RX100 but included in the HX20V.

Thanks for posting the link to the video. Of course, this is our old friend Jens Faerber, who has made adapter rings for several other Sony cameras. I certainly can vouch for his handiwork, as I bought one for my HX100V.

Here's a video that shows you how to install it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj9zisOPxxc&feature=plcp

Obviously, there's a bit of adhesive tape involved, though the kit includes a ring that helps you center the actual adapter ring properly.

Here's a video showing the effect of different filters, a lens hood, and so on "in use" on the camera as it shoots the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEQ3Fd809pY&feature=plcp

And, here's the video showing him attaching the different filters to his installed adapter ring:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYRsNiIz1bk&feature=plcp

I'm not familiar with the Lensmate G12/S100 adapter, but it looks like it's quite a bit "more stuff" than Jens' ring. So, at the least, Jens' ring looks like it's about as minimal as you're going to get -- just a tiny thing that gives you 52mm threads in front of the RX100's lens.

Like the videos say, just send an e-mail to the address he mentions:

faerberj@googlemail.com

And, presuming that it all works the way he's always done it, you just say that you want to buy his RX100 adapter ring, and he'll reply to you with an e-mail with all of the details. And then you would basically be sending a PayPal payment, making sure you include your name, address, e-mail address, and that you're ordering the RX100 adapter ring. And then it should be on its way to you, shortly thereafter.

I recall it taking about a week for my HX100V adapter ring to get to me here on the west coast of the US, but folks on the other side of the country got theirs quite a bit quicker.

Anyway, that should be the drill, and I expect that I'll be sending Jens another e-mail, very soon.

35 euro including shipping. Pricey for what it is, due to the exchange rate, but I'm taking a trip in a few weeks and it was clear that no one else could have an adapter in my hands before I left. In my mind at least, I rationalized the price was OK because of the 52mm filter size. I have a bunch of 52mm filters for my Nikon gear, so I won't need to buy additional filters or step up rings.

A ND filter blocks a specified amount of visible light. It blocks all wave lengths equally so the colors of the scene are not altered (hence the name Neutral Density). Say you want to shoot a waterfall with a long exposure to get that silky effect of the blurred falling water. All P&S cams do not have an aperture that is small enough to allow a really long shutter speed. So mounting a ND filter will allow to shoot with longer shutter speeds in brighter conditions.

As for why these high-end P&S's don't come with filter threads, the only explanation I can offer is that the camera companies don't bother to examine how their products are being used. If Canon or Sony or Nikon actually read forums like this, they would realize that small high-end P&S cams need a grip and the ability to take filters.

I count at least 3 providers of adapter rings (plus cheesy cam that's in prototype) and at least 2 providers of grips (plus the leather-look skins that provide extra grip). So clearly the camera companies have room for improvement.

My dream P&S has a big sensor, a 5x zoom minimum (w/ 24mm wide end 35mm equivalent), easy to grip, takes a standard filter size and fits in a shirt pocket. I'm not asking for much and the RX100 comes closer to that than anything I've found. I' just glad there are people like Jens Faerber and Richard Franiec out there.

Thanks for the info, Tom. I'm a newb here and had not heard of Jens before I did a google search for "rx100 filter adapter" last week. I was a little nervous buying something from some one I stumbled upon through youtube, but he has been very nice and professional to deal with. As soon as I get the adapter, I'll post an update to this thread.

No worries -- Jens is a straight-up guy. He makes good stuff and he takes care of his customers. I'm just amazed at how quickly he comes up with adapters for new cameras so soon, and then he's got stock and he's ready to sell them. And his adapters definitely get the job done.

By all means, let us know how it goes when you get yours!

I just ordered one from Jens.
30 euros or about $36, comparable to what Lensmate is charging.

here's the email that Jens sent me:
"Thank you for your interest.
Yes, I do for an adapter ring for Sony RX100 make.

It can all filters (UV, Pol, Sky, Star, infrared etc.) with a diameter of 43 or 52 mm and
Macro lens Raynox DCR-150 or 250 record.

The adapter is easy with tools (tube) is bonded perfectly to the lens (with double adhesive tape).

It hinders anything - the lens can move freely and also turn off the camera poses no problem.
Price range: Adapter 43mm or 52mm including tool tube: 24,50 €
Shipping (USA) by certified mail costs 5.50 €
If you're happy with the price, I'll give you my PayPal account.
After receipt of the money part will be shipped immediately."

So, I guess you choose which size you want.

And without looking, I'll presume you'll find far more filters and such for 52mm than you would for 43mm, if you don't have any in either size already....

I wonder how this compares in "minimal-ness" and in quality to the cheesycam rig that is coming eventually. ( http://cheesycam.com/examples-with-cpl-filter-on-rx100/ )

It takes 42mm filters, if I am reading the digits on the video properly. That doesn't seem to be an easy size to find, unless they come as part of the package he is designing.

What I don't understand about Jens' setup is how it takes both 52mm and 43mm filters. Or are there two different setups, depending on which size filter you want to use?
