Nikon D3100-Can't change my aperture in manual mode
Aug 15, 2012

I am a beginner in photography and I started using manual mode recently, from past 2 days I am unable to change my aperture in manual mode even after pressing the exposure compensation button. I can change only the shutter speed.

I can change aperture settings in Aperture-priority and Shutter speed-priority but not in Manual mode. I have pressed the AE-L button on and off, and tried every menu setting I could find. I still have no clue what is wrong.

Can somebody help me?

Are you actually holding the exposure compensation button down as you turn the command dial?

For the D3200, when in manual mode, you hold down the exposure compensation button and turn the dial to change aperture.

I assume it's the same for D3100

I have a D3100 and can confirm that you have to hold down the + - exposure button and turn the dial at the same time to change the aperture in manual mode. I can understand why this might be confusing since in aperture priority mode this changes exposure compensation and aperture is changed in the same way you change shutter speed in M mode. It is also annoying because as far as I can tell, you cannot change exposure compensation in manual mode. I usually swith the A mode, change exposure comp., and then back to M mode which maintains the exp. comp. settings of A mode.

That's why people prefer two dials cameras. Sometimes is confusing but after a while it will be automatic for you.

You can change EC before entering M mode or using Info Screen afterwards.
