The RX100 digital zoom is amazing!

Here's a shot with no zoom to show you where I was shooting from.

Here's max digital zoom.

I couldn't believe how well that turned out.

IMO sony's clear zoom is so good, it should not be referred to as digital zoom.

It is so good, I wish they had started optical at 24mm, and let tele range be extended by clear zoom.

Was at beach past 4 days, missed 24mm wide.

I put a separate album in my gallery with full set of optical/zoom shots.

I have used the x2 clear zoom, which looks very good and which I think (not sure of the maths) gives the lens a boost of an extra 100mm, to give up to 200mm reach. when you pixel peep you can see some degreading but for prints and weak cropping it looks good.

I have avoided the normal digital zoom for the reasons that Dan said.

yes, that clear image zoom is quite impressive

here is an example I took last week, at first a sweep panorama, and then a clear image zoom shot, both taken from the same spot

How do you set the clear image/digital zoom functions?

In the menus it's greyed out, except when in memory recall mode, but it won't save the zoom functions when you switch out and back into the memory recall mode again?

Never mind, I found out you can't use the clear view/digital zoom mode when shooting in RAW or RAW+Jpeg.

I wish Sony would allow you to use these functions (as well as the picture modes) when shooting in RAW+Jpeg mode because they are useful features those of us who like to have a RAW file end up missing out on.

well, even if you shoot RAW, I suggest you test jpeg clear zoom so you know it's capabilities in case you want to use it in some situation.

a set of samples I took

I'vw just noticed that clear zoom removes the manual access to the Auto Focus Area and Metereing Mode. The AI of the camera is pretty good, but it's a shame to lose the metering mode.

Don't forget that despite clear zoom working well, it's still digital zoom — as in, it's taking a photo and then doing post-processing on it.

This is likely why it isn't available in RAW, because the whole point of RAW is for there to not be any post-processing; if you want to do that, you can do it in Photoshop. This is also why focusing and metering options are limited, because what you see on your screen via clear zoom isn't strictly what the sensor sees.

Isn't it just a crop and smart upscale, which you could do afterwards anyway?

pixel binning for the win!
In reply to IT Troll, Aug 17, 2012

The RX100 uses something called by-pixel technology, which seems to be some unique form of data binning. It all sounds suspect in text, but the proof is in the pictures... there are some serious algorithms working behind the scenes in Sony's Clear Image Zoom and apparently the digital side now too.

Bottom line is that 'digital zoom' isn't such a dirty thing when using a newer Sony. So far the results I have seen in my pictures and those of others have blown me away.

To anyone that is in doubt, go find an RX100 and test it out.

I don't know how the RX100 compares, but the HX20V's Clear Zoom can be pretty much emulated with a little work in Photoshop — it's essentially a case of upscaling, then doing some basic correction (sharpening, perhaps noise reduction). The results are about the same, maybe slightly better if you're really precise in Photoshop and understand the tools.

Basically Clear Zoom does about as good a job as is possible when upscaling images. I assume it's detecting exactly what level of zoom is being used and then using the appropriate amount of sharpening, etc; which is what's done in Photoshop, except manually and relying upon the eye to get it right.

I personally will stick to manual post-processing, however for those who don't like to spend much time in Photoshop and find the mere thought of the above laborious it's a great alternative and one that should be in all cameras in future rather than the relatively lazy 'digital zoom' which produces mushy results.
