Oly 75mm arrived - my thoughts after initial use
Aug 1, 2012

Don't expect rocket science, or any kind of science from this. It arrived this morning (from WEX in the UK) and I had approximately 20 mins to try it out at lunchtime.

When it turned up it was packed up in so much packaging the postie must have thought I was having a barbecue delivered. It is a fantastic lens and looks the part on the E-M5:

It seems a sharper lens than the 45mm F1.8 Olympus and pretty much has nothing wrong with its output. I note further that it has lots of contrast and produces lovely bokeh.

In any event here is a gallery of sample images (yes, they are pretty much all wide open, so shoot me).

This is from my roving around the Royal Exchange in London today. There was a free performance from a musician sponsored by the mayor’s office and a whole bunch of chuggers.

. . . An amazing lens, isn't it? Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I'm seeing a 3D effect in some your shots. I'm still learning to get the best results from mine but one thing I've learned is to not be afraid to leave it wide open at f/1.8 when the subject isn't too close.

I don't think it's a Leica, but it's easily the equal of (if not the better of) the Sony Zeiss 135 I sold recently (and that was a fine portrait lens). It weighs a lot less too.

I am definitely getting a 3D effect from some of the shots. The full size shots are on my blog, I'm not sure you see it in the compressed jpegs but the RAW files on my mac look great. I think this is into my everyday bag at the expense of the Oly 45mm.

Another shot:

Very happy with this purchase.

Beautiful and sharp shots! How does it feel w/out the grip? Robin Wong mentioned that it was somewhat off balance w/out the grip but I really don't feel like adding any bulk and like the feel of the omd w/out it.

I used the 75mm without the grip for about 90 minutes with just a thin wrist loop in case I dropped it, and it was completely fine. I had the grip with me just in case, but never felt like getting it out and attaching it.

No kidding. The 75 is shoving its way into the "special lens" category occupied by such royalty as the 150/2.0. Must resist temptation, must resist temptation, must resist temptation....

To the OP: the 45 is compellingly sharp, do you think the 75 is resolving more or is there more contrast or saturation or...?

Cheers,

Rick

I don't feel the need for the grip with the 75mm either. I'm not sure where the threshold is, but a 300g lens handles well without the grip in my case.

this lens weighs 300g i think? the om-d is 425g

that combination is still shy of the 1025g of the canon 85mm 1.2l as it sits not on any camera body at all.

if it was any longer you would prob feel the need of a grip for balance.

Thank you. It is fine without the grip, but I do have a gariz half case on the body the whole time (which does improve the grip). I don't think it's off balance.

The 75 looks to my eye to have to have a cooler render but is slightly sharper and more contrasty. So if i had to guess I would say it has more resolving power. All non scientific as I didn't put it on a tripod etc. The 45 is still a fine lens (and much cheaper).

Dang it...I keep seeing too many nice images from this lens. I keep telling myself I don't need it....but I do want it. I probably better save for a high quality zoom (I hope Oly makes a 24-70 f/2.8 equiv soon)

I am so impressed with the shots I have seen from you, and others, that I probably will put this lens at the top of my "acquisitions" list, to be bought before any other photo equipment.
