24-70 locks up D4
Jul 23, 2012

My durable lens with most usage has been acting strange these days. I thought it was wear and tare. Well what I've been experiencing lately is that the 24-70 will act strange in some random occasions with the D4:
1. the 24-70 will block the aperture dial on the D4.
2. the 24-70 will freeze the D4 altogether.
3. turning off the D4 will solve the problem.

I contacted my dealer and he told me that Nikon has acknowledged some users have been experiencing problems with the combo of 24-70 and the D4.

I was advised not to use highlights warning and the histogram in my screen with the combo. There was no reason given from Nikon for this advice.

Any input on this from your side?

just thought i would chime in here that this is my most common combination, D4 24-70 with I also use highlights warning. I experience no issues. My style of sports shooting requires me to shoot 1500-2000 in 4-5 hour time period.

Had the same problems on my D3 and D3X with 24-70. After repair my 24-70 works well without issues anymore even on my new D4 and D800E.

The D4 has been out several months and this is the first time I've heard of this situation. Considering the number of pros who own the Nikkor 24-70, I am sure the forums would have a lot more traffic regarding this topic if there was a compatibility issue.

Just my 2 cents....JL

I've snapped off about 3,000-5,000 shots with my D4+24-70 combo at weddings this past summer with no issue.

Had the D4 since March, so I would send the lens in for this issue...it's not the body.

Absolutely yes! no highlight warning - histogram should be no problem.

Have you tried cleaning the lens bayonet and camera throat electric contacts?
Doing this cures most AF issues

Many problems turn out to be a lack of intimate knowledge of complex modern camera equipment.

First, do you have the D4 firmware 1.01 (or latest v1.02) installed? Early on, many D4 owners reported having lockup issues, wherein the card write lamp stayed continuously lit and the camera became unresponsive. Firmware v1.01 was supposedly developed to correct that problem - I say "supposedly" because a few subsequently reported that the firmware update had not fixed the problem. The current firmware version is v1.02 - this supposedly fixes other bugs. I would load this v1.02 firmware as well - the reason I say this is because Nikon can make undocumented tweaks to further improve previous bug fixes. The other piece of datum I can offer is that the original lockup of the D4 was not lens-specific - in my case, I was using a 70-200 VII when I experienced multiple lockups.

I loaded the latest firmwares as soon a s they were issued. The reports are that only very few users of my combo (D4 and 24-70) are still experiencing lockups ... So I just wanted to see if there are similar experiences out there!
