P510 + Raynox 150 test
Jul 18, 2012

I picked up a Raynox 150 today on sale for $50.

Not the most interesting subject, but it'll do for now.
Shot under fluorescent lighting.

The subject is an Australian 5 cent piece. 19.4mm in diameter.
The IRB (initials of the designer) is 1mm across.

I have really enjoyed the super macro shots with my SZ-30MR, but the Raynox at full zoom on my P510 has about 3X the image scale of the SZ-30's super macro.

The added bonus and luxury is that the Raynox does not have to be so very close to the subject.

Thanks jethro.

And thank you for showing us your Raynox images with your P510 which inspired the purchase.

I'm looking forward to trying it out in the better light of day time, with more interesting subjects.

Still coming to grips with the dynamics of the Raynox 150. More practice required.

Some notes:
1. The shorter the focal length the more DOF
2. The longer the focal length, the less DOF. Focus stacking is an option.

3. The longer the focal length, the more precise the distance from subject is required,
the less margin for error in focusing.

4. The longer the focal length, additional steadiness is required or better light.
5. Various focal lengths require moving camera away or closer.

Some initial field tests:

Thanks jethro.

I also have an old microscope which came with an ancient T-Adapter. Its too narrow to use and the field of the eyepiece itself is too narrow to put the camera against for eyepiece projection.

Its hard to use 400x and 1000x due to such a narrow DOF, though I remember many years ago looking at pollen at 1000x and it looked like a ball covered in spikes.

The 40x and 100x are easier to use. Just need to see if I can get an adapter for it...

Hi MarioV,

With the Nikon P510, do you use the filter holder from Raynox? For my SX10is I bought the filter holder AND the Raynox universal adaptor.

Thank,

  • Mark

Hi Mark

The P510 does not have a filter thread so you must use the universal adapter.
