RX100 - Filter?

Is it possible to mount a CPL on the RX100? Is an adapter needed?

Sony RX100

Unfortunately, RX100 has no filter thread, which is the biggest disadvantage of this camera. You either have to handold the filter (no problem on a tripod but difficult in handheld operation of the camera), or buy an adaptor.

I have found the following solutions:

Adaptor mounted on the lens

Adaptor mounted at the tripod mount. Note that the front diameter of the versions for 43mm filters do have an inner diameter of 41mm, while the diameter of the RX100 front lens segement is about 43mm. The distance from the centre of the tripod mount of RX100 to the front of the lens is about 58mm (ruler held diagonal)

It's a shame that it can't take a filter but definitely not a deal breaker for me.

I'm sure Lensmate will have a front filter thread solution like they do for the Canon S series

It could mean gluing a little connector tab for the front of the lens barrel which would add about 1mm of depth to the camera, but for the serious shooter who wants to be able to use filters, it should work well

I plan on getting one if/when they offer one

Heck, I might even glue a filter step up/down ring I file down thin as possible onto there myself LOL

Or for a less permanant solution, I think finding the right size PVC tube with a filter ring glued to the end that just slides over the extended lens would also work well enough. Have to take it on/off but be a bit quicker than the tripod mounted filter holders

They make a magnetic filter holder that goes on the front and holds filters. Like this one

I have inquired at lensmate and they confimed that there will be a filter holder for RX100. Meanwhile, another holder might be available:

The cheesycam one doesn't seem to be available yet either.

Here is my very temporary solution using foam and electrical tape. It's not a tight fit so I can rotate this CPL filter. You can't beat the price though, eh!
