Using Raw File Converter - step-by-step tutorial
Jul 6, 2012

For the enlightened (or impoverished!) ones among us who like or would like to try RFC I am currently running a step-by-step tutorial in the SLR/X100 forum on this page :

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1020&thread=41941743

The sample image used comes from dpreview and represents a typical file you might get with an X10 or one of the other RAW-shooting Fuji cameras.

You can work with the X-Pro 1 image used in the tutorial with your own version of RFC for a lesser or earlier model camera as long as you update RFC via the Fuji website here :

http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/myfinepix_studio/rfc/v3291/index.html

From dpreview's sample pages for the X-pro 1 review we get this JPEG :

http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/reviewsamples/photos/2058899/dscf9391?inalbum=fujifilm-x-pro1-review-samples

Or here you can see it here via my gallery:

View it at large size and note the fringeing in the trees on the left and the sign in the foreground on the right, and the general smearing of fine detail in foliage, the distant scene on the hill behind the station and the like. Then check the over-exposure, such as on the station building in the background.

The RAW is available from here (scroll to the bottom and choose the third file):

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-pro1/19

Compare the areas mentioned regarding the JPEG in the processed RAW(s) below and you will notice good improvements .

The bundled Raw File Converter EX renders it like this in my hands:

And the latest version of Silkypix, DSP5, can do this to it if you like:

While it might take a while to read through the tutorial the actual work in adjusting the image will not take much time at all.

Enjoy!

If you haven't yet looked at RFC/Silkypix here is a basic, text-only tutorial to get you familiar with the software and its features :

Windows only?

Or it is the same as "MyFinePix Studio RAW FILE CONVERTER" for Mac?
