I'm a little surprised that Sigma has left the OS out of the Sony version. Tamron turned off a lot of buyers with their decision to do that, then charging the same for a non OS version.

I wasn't aware that there was a Sony mount version of this lens. The Sigma website only mentions Canon, Nikon, and Sigma mounts. (B&H also shows only the above three.)

Here is the comparison for Sigma 18-250mm Macro (new) vs Tamron 18-270PZD vs Canon 18-200mm IS.

One problem I see is the DXO Optics pro and Adobe lightroom don't have this lens profile for corrections. I wonder if you could use the older non Macro 18-250 Sigma lens and get good results - or if either one will add it to their database anytime soon.

I think you'll enjoy it. It is the perfect walkaround lens. I do not miss my Canon 18-200 at all.

BTW, I would never buy anything from a Brooklyn camera shop. But, that's me. (And, I'm from Brooklyn.)

Here is a link to suggest they support the lens - I filled it out and it said no plans at this time but I'm sure the more it gets requested the faster they will add it.

They are a top rated power seller on eBay? I know nothing about them but hopefully it works out. Too late now anyway.

I'm sure you'll be fine. They're no B&H, but they have a decent rep.

3 months on ... anymore views on this lens? Would be very interested if anyone has compared it to the Nikkor 55-200 VR in their overlapping range.

I don't see any DPR 'macro' samples there. Whats up, DPR?

18-250mm's? With macro? Seems a dream.

There's a sample in the gallery that shows the lens's 'macro' performance, which can also be compared to one shot at the same time from the Nikon 18-300mm (in the gallery from that review). The macro shooting capability is also, as always, tested and discussed in the review text itself.

Just remember that like most zooms with 'Macro' in the name, you're not getting something that will replace a true Macro lens. It's not bad at all for what it is, but it doesn't give the same magnification, is nowhere near as sharp, and doesn't offer a flat field of focus.

Re: New Sigma 18-250 Macro- barrel creep?
In reply to Andy Westlake, Mar 3, 2013

Don't meant to hijack this thread.  But can owners of this lens out there comment on lens creep with the 18-250 macro? I understand there's a lock at the 18mm position to keep the lens from creeping when you're walking around. But does the barrel move on its own when you're shoot straight up or down? Thanks.

My girlfriend and I got this lens in January.  No creep issues yet.  As a side note, we love this lens.  It's af is quiet, very sharp across the range, is MUCH smaller than the Canon 18-200 which we both had and sold.  It also enabled s to get rid of our Canon 55-250 lenses, saving weight and space in the bags.

overall, we are very happy.  We found them for $399 from Beach Camera on the Amazon site

I am looking at buying this lens, but I cant figure out which one is actually for sale on some of the websites - the old or new version - is there a quick way to tell?  I have had this issue with a previous lens purchase, and the sigma serial #s were interchanged on the seller website.

any answers, thank you. I happily own a 17-70 and a 120-400, looking for the catch-it-all zoom lens

thanks

I've tested focus distance of sigma 18-250 macro in comparisson with sigma 50-200 dc os hsm. Made several shots from a tripod with this to lenses in order to get the same frame size. Appeared that 250mm on sigma 18-250 equals only 160mm on sigma 50-200. Is it such a manufacturer's joke?

How close were you focusing?  I believe the maximum focal length of the 18-250 decreases as you subject distance decreases.

I have just validated that my Sigma 18-250 Macro has a longer effective maximum focal length than a Nikon 18-200, on distances as short as 12 feet, but I did not test macro-style shooting.

I looked at http://www.dxomark.com/index.php and compared the results of this sigma to the Nikon 18-200 Vr1. I was so impressed with the performance on the D7000 that I bought it. It will arrive Monday evening (4/15/2013) and I suspect my nikon 18-200VR 2 / Nikon 55-300 VR / Nikon 18-105 VR will all be for sale.
