Sony better come up with a solution

on the A77 noise issue. I always have the phobia of taking indoor sports with the A77. I feel pain when I discover that the Olympus OM-D E-5 perform very much better then the A77 in terms of high ISO noise.

-You have already got the solution. You discovered the Olympus OMD E5 perform much better than the A77, then go with the Olympus.

?? is it that bad? I am going to buy my first DSLR soon and I was looking at a couple sonys including the a77. How are the other sony models in comparison? My friend has had Nikon for many years and I have been impressed with his D7000, how is the a77 in comparison to that one? (if you know).

Solution: back to 16mp sensor
In reply to lim yau tong, Jun 30, 2012

If Sony put 16mp sensor in the body of A77 I think many people would be happy. I have been playing around A57 these days, I can get worry-free ISO3200 easily, even pushing to 6400 is not a big problem.

Hehe, you can downsampling, same size all you want, I honestly think A55/580/57 just doing better job in high ISO. People won't complain their A77 if it dilever the same performance.

Kit lens, very low light (notice slow shutter speed), AND handheld:

Harder in camera NR will do that. Use a good piece of NR software, like Nik Dfine or Noise Ninja and you'll retain more detail in the A77 photos once you get the noise levels comparable.

People complain because they expect the A77 to perform worse at similar actual ISO values, not because it does. There are hardly even any controlled tests, and most people are unaware of that the ISO numbers on the A77 are very conservative.

They look good to me (on website resolution), so A77 is even cleaner than D700 than?

Is Matching Shutter Speed/f stop a More Accurate Way to Judge?
In reply to lim yau tong, Jun 30, 2012

In a recent blog someone made the argument that because Sony conservatively measures ISO, more light reaches the sensor on its competitors than on a Sony SLR. In effect, for example, ISO 3200 on an A77 equals ISO 1600 on one of the "cleaner" cameras. He made the argument that a better way to test would be to match shutter speed/f stop rather than ISO.

Is this assessment accurate?

Has anyone done this experiment?

For about the 50th time my 16mp A55 has no less noise than my A65 when viewed at the same size.

I own both an A55 and A65 - same size photo, same noise
In reply to Amateur Sony Shooter, Jun 30, 2012

I use an A55 and an A65 side by side all the time. At the same size my A55 has no less noise than my A65. That's a fact and I will disagree with anybody that claims differently.

Amateur,

I agree. If the A77 has the 16 mp like the A57, I am sold with the A77. All the features of the A77 are very impressive. This is what I noticed also with my A57 that ISO 100-1600 are "worry free" zone. ISO 3200 is acceptable.
Here is a sample taken with 16-50mm in our church.
