Ditching E-M5 for Leica X2 (see picture). Keeping PL3.
Jun 15, 2012

The Leica X2 is $ 1995. For me portability is key as I like to stuff cameras in my jacket pocket. I protect the camera in a padded case and stuff it in my pocket.

The E-M5 with the 25mm is too large for a pocket. Even with a 20mm. And they represent $ 1599. I already have the VF-2 which I can use on the PL3, XZ-1 and X2.

I'll keep the more portable PL3 and the other small primes 14 and 20mm and 45mm. Also I'll keep the 40-150mm. The PL3 has EVF, tilt.

The IQ on the X2 is better due to the larger sensor and Leica Elmarit lens. I can see that in the pictures. Reviewers agree. Reviews always complain about the $ 2000 of the Leica, but the E-M5 and 25mm are in the ballpark.

The Leica is small and fits in a pocket like the Oly XZ-1. Even the PL3 is almost 1/2" thicker than the Leica X2 or XZ-1.

Picture shows left to right PL3 20mm, X2, E-M5 25mm, XZ-1

Can't wait to see your pictures of shrubs taken with the X2!

I'm sure my E-M5 can't do that...

There is no way it is going to have better (or worse) IQ than the OM-D and 25mm f1.4.

It is smaller because it has a fixed, f2.8 lens. If neither of those bother you, it will be fine.

If you want a decent compact, just get one - Olympus XZ-1 for example rather than a ridiculously overpriced Leica X2. An alternative would be a Canon S100.

If you are going to ditch anything it should be the E-PL3.

PP

No evf on the X2, You should put the 20mm at least on the OMD, therefore we could compare;

40mm f3.4 omd FF (equiv)
vs
35mm f4.2 x2 FF (equiv)

So as well as the better dof and over a stop faster in real world, 1.7vs2.8 and the ibis and the evf built-in, I think you are having a laugh.

Plus, you could fit the 14mm 2.5, again in the real world 1/3 stop faster and a bit more dof but wider.

The 12, the 45 arent that big either plus you have the zoom pancake from Pany if you are outdoors, all in all I think you are bored old man? OMD appears to kill the x2 and I am not exactly Oly's no1 fan, but on this you are looking the same old fool.

If OP is really so keen to get rid of his E-M5, he should sell for $500

Unless the IQ is exactly the same, the X2 either has to have better or worse. I'd never bet against a Leica lens.

Why should a fixed lens bother him? And an f2.8 lens on APS-C will have similar DOF to an f1.4 lens in m43, no?

Huh, interesting logic. Just curious, though, won't fixed FL on the Leica be an issue for you and the kinds of things you typically shoot?

No. An f2.8 lens on FF has similar DoF characteristics as an f1.4 lens on M43.

He is not completely leaving DSLR land, just as by ditching the E-M5 he is not completely leaving M43. This kind of makes sense. He is choosing the P3 over the M5 and the 20mm over the 25, both very valid decisions. Maybe not to M5 and PL25 lovers?
