D800 bokeh - what's not to love
May 31, 2012

These are SOOC except for resizing.

Taken with AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED

Taken with AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED

They both appear a little soft to me though.

Hi RKDauph

Is this D800 bokeh or just your lens bokeh. I was under the limited understanding that the bokeh quality had to do with the lens and not the sensor/camera body. Do I have an incorrect understanding?
BTW - nice shots

for a real test of bokeh take some shots with lights in the background like this (you want your bokeh to look like the bokeh on the right):

Lens bokeh, but FX format gives me more to work with.
In reply to JohnWheeler, Jun 1, 2012

I haven't had this much creative DOF control since I shot film - my first FX Nikon after years of DX. It's not that the bokeh is any different, it's the format that gives you more to work with.

Not sure that the D800 improves bokeh.....

Hi!

A lot of reasons for some to consider 'upgrading' to the D800, I'm not sure that the D800 improves Bokeh over previous bodies:

There is nothing not to like about the Bokeh, but Bokeh is the last or not even a reason i am getting the D800E, I am getting it for the high resolution, it's just same kind of bokeh I can create with any of my FF camera, D3, 1Ds2, 5D2.....

Mr RBFresno,

Over the years we have come to great familiarity with these pictures.

I had thought you would post your lattest bokeh work from Tanzania....May be next time?

Nice image...although the lens creates the bokeh......
In reply to Dan_168, Jun 1, 2012

Any FF camera would give the same bokeh with a given lens.
