DPR summed it up precisely as most experienced users did here on day 1:

"The Pentax K-01 is a bit of an odd duck. It's a mirrorless camera that's as big as digital SLRs, which sort of defeats the purpose of being mirrorless in the first place."

Pro :

"Photographers who want a camera that'll garner attention and take great photos, who don't mind its size and below average performance ."

Con :

"People who take photos of moving subjects, or who want the main benefit of a mirrorless camera: a compact body."

Wrong. Not the same size as a DSLR
In reply to Pentax_Prime, May 31, 2012

Sorry. I've owned a few DSLR's. Not the same size at all.

Go to a retailer and check it out (preferably with a pancake prime attached) before you make this claim.

No need to go that far: http://camerasize.com/compare/#285,206

"Pentax K-01 is 11% (6 mm) thicker than Olympus E-420.

Pentax K-01 [560 g] weights 26% (115 grams) more than Olympus E-420 [445 g] (inc. batteries and memory card)."

Oly also has the 25mm/2.8 pancake.

You just cherry-picked an extremely small DSLR with a fourthirds sensor. Do they still make the E-420?

Like I said, I've owned full-size DSLRs with APS-C sensors. There's a considerable size difference.

Why are so many so eager to denigrate the K-01 that they'll use bad-faith arguments and faulty logic to support their prejudice?

My apologies. I guess I was insinuating that you were repeating the claim without question, i.e. supporting the claim.

Are you serious?

The E-420 is also higher (+12mm) and wider (+8.5mm), and if you look at the top view, where it's supposed to be thinner you'll start to ask how on Earth are they measuring (eye-cup not included? what else?). But you chose a single dimension, the one that shows (it doesn't, in fact) the smallest difference.
The weight difference is due to metal vs. plastic.

Re: Depends on how you look at it...esp mirror less presumptions
In reply to Alex Sarbu, May 31, 2012

I have a K5 and love it and personally I wouldn't buy this as FOR ME if there is no OVF then an articulation screen becomes essential ......it is why I don't like using my little LX5 ....

HOWEVER

In the long run I am not sure thatPentax are not right .. I quite like the size of this camera ....the heft is useful to me ....and why should we assume that the only point of errorless is being small????

I think the use of K lenses and the bigger size is not a problem esp if a collapsable 18-55 lens could be made ???. If they made a small compact 35mm equiv FOV lans like the 40mm then this would make a great back up camera .. with all the advantages of mirror less ... in video / multiple capture etc with mo mirror slap ....

If they bring out another then they need

1/ Better performance
2/ articulating screen
3/ a tiny lens which like the x100/x1 has a 35mm FOV--

DPR - holy arbiters of public taste
In reply to Pentax_Prime, May 31, 2012

Pentax_Prime wrote:

Who ever said that size (and whatever it may mean) must be the main benefit of the mirrorless design? It can be described as technological perk in a certain camera design approach, but it's by no mean a self-righteous, indisputable value.

Or maybe to rephrase: why should all mirrorless designs strive towards the small size?

How do one explores what's possible with mirrorless design if it's to take really long, heavy lenses — does small size counts then? Is it counterproductive?

What is "small", what is "acceptably small", what is "not really small" etc. in that arena, and who or what defines it?

Now, in all this story the issue is not whether the K01 deserves the score or not, but the issue is of DPR's patronising and imposing attitude of the arbiters of photographic taste, of a holy yardstick that defines what is of "sufficient" or "insufficient" size in the universe they want to define.

Yer, if the world was run by reviewers we'd be restricted to lowest-common-denominator clones.

Thank goodness real customers have more diverse tastes.

Image stabilization is a very nice feature, even for video. This is a con if you can't use SR during video.
