Ordering from DigitalRev to US question
Ordering from DigitalRev to US question
May 29, 2012
So anyone order from them? I have heard rather good things, other than a little price gouging. I am getting a bit feed up waiting to get an OM-D and within certain reason I NEED it by the end of June for a week of July 4th family reuniion (likely to be the last one for several people attending). Hence at late June deadline.
Anyway I have a silver body only (now I am regretting ordering the exact config I really wanted) from B&H, but with rumors of no deliver until late June or even July cropping up...especially with a 4/3 pre-order date.
I also put in a "pre-order" with Adorama for a black + 14-42 kit late last week as a hedge it they get that in earlier.
Sadly I already got the FL-300r from B&H for the rebate, but it is well outside of the return period now. I have pretty much come to peace with that though. Ideally I'd like to get another one with the camera and still take advantage of the rebate (and likely sell the flash then to recoup some of the cost), hence the Adorama order.
I sold some legacy glass and cameras as well as some old CCG cards I had laying around to "afford" the transition and made more money than I had hoped. So at this point I am willing to jump on ANY of the kits that come up (pretty much just decided that over the weekend). I really don't want to pay a premium (especially a $300 one) just to get the camera, but as I said I really need/want this camera before the end of the month of June.
So, all that said as background, I am looking at DigitalRev as a source to order by mid June if I can't find a US supplier. I really, really don't want to pay the premium, but will if I need to. So how reliable are they? Experience on how long it takes to recieve stuff from them to US addresses (so I can get an idea of how far in advance I need to safely order from them)?
It's 12500 Hong Kong dollars or $1600 USD, or $300 more than the US price for a EM5 with 12-50. Maybe the money is better spent toward a good fast charging strobe to use with your wife's EPL1, and a 20mm to go with the 45mm you have on order. FL300 won't cut it anyway. Too small. Probably slow to charge.
With good light and faster lenses than the 12-50, I could see a PEN working fine for a family re-union at a hotel. Assume there is not going to be any indoor basketball, candle lighting ceremonies, or stage performances? Do the group shots someplace in the daytime with good light so you're not hobbled by poor AF in the dark. Grab candids with the 45mm.
Edit: There is a black EM5 body for sale at mu-43.com's resale section. $1250 with paypal. Still available as of this morning. You still should look for a boomer of a flash though.
I have the Pany 14/2.5, Sigma 30/2.8 and the Oly 45/1.8 is on its way to me as I type this. I also have the FL300r, S20 and Vivitar 285hv, wireless triggers, stands, umbrellas, etc.
The three things I am looking for are the higher resolution, better high ISO noise and faster autofocus. I generally prefer to shoot with natural light and a lot of the gatherings are likely to be indoors at my in-laws beach house and a couple of activities planned around sunset with cook-outs. At least to my taste, ISO400 is about as high as I am willing to trust the E-PL1 100% of the time. I can sometimes push it to ISO640 or ISO800 and I have a few ISO1000, 1250 and 1600 shots I like from her camera, but quality falls apart a lot and tons of shadow noise once I get much above 400 in my opinion.
So for my general use, the OM-D should likely add quite a bit of flexibility.
I did check out the sale you mentioned. I'd be willing to buy used, but not above the price of a new camera at MSRP at any rate. According to Olympus the warranty is international, but NOT transferable. So someone taking advantage of the rebate, me not getting a warranty on the camera and them trying to also sell their gear for more than they bought it for just rub me the wrong way.
At least if I am going to pay a premium I want to be able to have the 1 year warranty to cover me if something does go wrong with the camera.
They had the Fuji X100 way before others.
I called them and they put me on their "call when we get some in" list. The person I spoke to said there were a few people ahead of me, but not a lot. No ETA on more cameras, but "should be some day soon". He also laughed when he asked about camera color preference and I told him "Silver, but at this point I'll take anything".
Apparently most people he has spoken too have said the same thing
At any rate, as a "last resort", Digitalrev feedback? Especially ship times to the US?
I can't help you with DR, but if you do go with them, let us know of your experience.
If Murphy's comes through, let us know too.
Well for better or worse I cant tell you. I ended up breaking down and getting a used black + 14-42 used on eBay in LN condition for the new price. It was one of the couple that have come on in the last day or two. I was/am just sick of waiting. So hopefully by sometime next week I'll finally have an OM-d
Still holding my breath a little bit as of course I am now waiting for it to show up and need to make sure it is in good working order before I'll be able to breath easy. That said the gent selling it has excellent feedback and has sold a fair amount of camera gear through eBay in the past.
Depending on customs (Canada to US) I am guessing mid next week since it is expedited shipping...but US customs can sometimes be really bad.
I'll certainly report back though if I hear from Murphy's.
I might take a small trip to the store to see what's shaking there. I need to get out of the house.
I went by there today and he said two weeks before their new shipment. They had a Black Fuji X100, and a X Pro 1, but no 46mm lens caps or M4/3 rear caps. They come and they go. Oh well.
