If this is true - just hope that the focus on making it small does not compromise optical quality too much.

I was to buy a C3 with 16mm when the F3 was announced, now the pancake zoom... NEX is an interesting system indeed. And very tempting for a legacy glass owner like me, of course for the focus peaking.

Ciao!

Rumors have it that the 16-50 G lens will come along with the new Nex-F5 camera. My concerns is, will the new lens be optimized for the smaller sensor of the F5 and not the larger 24mp of the Nex-7. All the Sony e mount lens that Photozone tested on the Nex-7 did not do well. I don't have a problem paying the extra money for a quality 16-50mm G lens, but I would expect it to perform better on the 24mp sensor than what available from Sony now. I would love to have a 16-50mm G lens for my Nex-7, but I won't run out quick to get it until I see how it performs on the 24mp sensor. JMHO

You do know that these sensors are actually same size, just different resolutions, right?

Seems unlikely that Sony would be "optimizing" one of their higher line lenses (G) for their mid-line camera. But we'll see.

"high quality pancake" is an oxymoron

Yes. Size does count. It will be interesting to see if Sony will address the issues that Photozone claims their tests show there is with the e mount lens on the Nex-7.

they wouldn't call it a "g" lens if it compromised optical quality.

That would certainly be more like what I expected to ensure G quality.

My big concern would be...
In reply to edwardaneal, May 26, 2012

My big concern would be that this rumored pancake zoom will also be a power zoom , and not have a manual zoom ring.

Power zoom is sooooo p&s, and it is also one of the things I truely hated about every p&s I owned.

The 'G' quality is good, but if it is also a power zoom only, then that would be a deal breaker, no matter how good the IQ.

Do you fail to realize how difficult and annoying it would be to manually zoom and focus with a pancake lens?

But a motorized zoom... on a mirrorless ILC? There's no 'zoom button' on the NEX body, and having it use the dial would interfere with the menu/settings options.

It seems highly unlikely IMHO. The kit lens in manual zoom, and so is ever other variable focal length E-Mount lens.

There's a company down the road called Panasonic. You might have heard of them. They had the nerve to produce a pancake lens with powerzoom even though none of their bodies had a zoom control. Incredible, isn't it? You see, they probably came up with powerzoom because it's really freaking hard to manually zoom and focus a lens that is no longer than the width of your finger.

I do have to agree with you I don't like power zoom either. It is one of the things i don't like about the Panasonic. But when the IQ is great and the lens is small...

Well I think I will still hate it. So I do hope this is not true, but I think it is...

I'm very interested how they implement the powerzoom and the power focussing, who know it is less bad then we think... But still manual zoom is better!
