Before the SD1 release, the previewed price was around 2000/2500€. Then the SD1 release hit the market at the price of 7000€. Then the street price of SD1 (Merrill) drop to the firstly announced price range, with the explaination of production difficulties. Now, those difficulties are surely over, and rumors when the dp1/2m where announced tell Sigma hoped to stay at the same price level as dp1/2.

There should be some problems with the dp2m development, if Sigma can resolve those within two months, I'm pretty sure the dp2m (and coming dp1m) will be released for less than 800€.

The question now is : what will happen to actual dp line? Will they see a big price drop, or will they simply be withdrawn from sigma's catalog?

The DP1x and DP2x are under 700 - with prices being as low as $650 US. You won't get the new M series that low.

I am not familiar with the Australian distributor(s). It is surprising, to say the least, that a distributor would bring a camera and not have any lenses for it. It doesn't make sense from a business standpoint.

So I will predict 800 - 900 (in the US). If I am wrong, you can say "I told you so" and I will flagellate myself, say "Mea Culpa Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa".

If I am right, well I am a very humble guy and will not bring it up to you.

sigma confirmeded at yokohama-fair that dp1/2m will cost less than dp1/2. what were there prices at start?

in a recent blog, a french sigma-staff-member(if the signature was correct...) said they will cost no more than 600 euro. i dont believe this. they will cost at least 950 chf. our tax-8% incl.

Hi Rick,

All i am doing is passing on information from what i consider a credible source, i too was shocked in a good way when he told me the price.

The Aussie distributor seems to have shifted their business model and are selling Sigma Cameras direct, this is evident with the current SD1 pricing that is well under US/EU prices.

Let's hope for all concerned that this is accurate as it would surely mean many more sales for Sigma than if they were priced at $1,000.00. I could envisage many people "giving the DPm a go" This in the long run could only be beneficial to the Sigma brand, which has copped a beating recently.

DP Review has the street price of the original 1 and 2 as $800 US each (2008 and 2009). It seems to me that it might have been more than that. It would be a mistake to have a price (US) more than a thousand dollars. I doubt that they could price it for less than the current DP1/2. And most likely a little more. The bottom line is that no price has been publicly announced yet. As Yogi Berra said "It ain't over until the fat lady sings".

One thing people need to understand is that it is a whole new ball game with the son running the show. I think that he will surprise a lot of people with the positive changes he implements.

I'm looking forward to that, Rick.

This is really good news, both the release time and estimated pricing. Unless something drastic happens (knock on wood) we could pick up both cameras for just a little more than what the DP1 originally cost.

In Australia it was AUD$1200 or so retail. I got mine for about $900 because I've bought a lot of gear from my dealer. I got the DP2 for about the same price. A $700 price on the DPxM is really going to make my day.

Now I just hope that SPP will be able to handle the files properly and deliver the same rich Foveon colours and biting sharpness of the original cameras with SPP 3.6.

DP2m & DP1m
In reply to katate, May 29, 2012

As a DP1 owner from 2009
Id buy DP1M and that would be it for all my landscapes.
(Then i wouldn't wonder about D800E, M9/M10 for landscapes).
£600 for what it has is to me very reasonable.

Although I must admit if there was a DPIM (Interchangeable Merrill)
it would be the one for me.

In my contax/yashica-times i could also get cams from yashica-distributor directly but this was obsolete when prices from reseller were better...

sigma should think about direct selling at least for situations where people cannot see and get stuff in their town.
yashica e.g. did never offer their cams to larger resellers.

But here they were the only ones showing some sigma-stuff, the ones with lower prices. DP1

One can get SD1M also with R, F-mount, soon with C/Y.
ask Luis Guevara.

It would be interesting if there was a a DPIM that could have interchangable lenses from the DP1M and the DP2M....... 2 primes & a single body, best of both worlds.

You would buy it, I would buy it... and some other enthusiasts would buy it too. But I fear that would not be enough to compensate for the development costs. Sigma is a big lens maker and a small camera maker.

One of many quotes probably supplied by Yogi's ghost writer. probably yogi as a catcher thought it was strike 3 at 2 outs and Yanks ahead in the 9th and the umpire said "Yogi..the game ain't over til it's over". Poor ump could have made millions and he missed the chance.
