Good discussion on focusing Dave & Mr. WhyNot
In reply to WhyNot, May 26, 2012

I usually use autofocus and then lean my body in or out, the 50mm and the 50-200 can have razor DOF, today I used a monopod, , more awkward than without of course, enjoyed seeing both of your images today

Love the second capture with the 520 + 50mm combo. The angle of capture is unusual; that is my kind of composition!....

First flower image is exquisite. The purple flower against the yellow and green bokeh is a lovely combination.

Dendrites and dots of Color

Second image reminds me of a network of connected dendrites....

Thanks carizi,

This short DOF image looks much better than the one with the base and sand in focus. Both are in my Joshua Tree gallery. I like the shadow pattern below these little dots.

Thanks, backlit Color
In reply to WhyNot, May 29, 2012

Thanks. The purple really shines in this backlit image. I saw similar flowers in the mountains above Pasadena, CA yesterday.

Wow, that's really soft light. I like the detail at the center too. It's a pleasing image.

The color combination is really good. I like the complimentary red and green with a touch of yellow.

I think that's the first time that form of address has happened to me...... I usually use a monopod with the 70-300mm lens so the fritillary was shot from a monopod; however, I don't think I've ever used AF and movement together. Whenever I use movement for focus I'm in MF.... I learn new techniques and gain knowledge every time I read this forum's entries.

Thanks again... I do like the diagonal in composition and will accentuate it when hand holding a camera but here I think the Buckeye was actually sitting on the edge of the flower.
