The S100 is the newer camera with more advanced features and superior model, yet its price is almost identical to that of the S95. Why would anyone want to buy the S95 at a premium price, considering it's almost 2 years old now?

Not a difficult question to answer.

1. The S95 is still a damn fine camera and some people even prefer it over the S100.

2. The S100 is being sold by everyone and their dog so the competition is stiffer. Those fewer shops still stocking the S95 have less competition.

3. The shops selling the S95 at lower prices are already out of stock. The ones that are sticking to their margins are the only ones with stock left so the average price is pushed up.

I have an S95 and if it went bad, my first instinct would be to get another one rather than an S100 since I already have the underwater case for it (S95 and S100 are not compatible).

In the UK the price of the S100 has hardly dropped since its release.

When the s100 was announced, I bought a second s95. Simply because it's such a good camera... plus, I get f2.0 at 28mm - something I can't do with the s100 that I consider important. Also, there were a couple of crippled features on the s100 - such as restricted long exposure ISOs etc.

Damned fine camera, the s95.

(rolls eyes heavily)

It's none of the supposed reasons above.

When a new camera is released, at first the price of the older model goes down as the retailers try to get rid of the older model.

After a few months, the price goes back up - 3rd party retailers store up older models of cameras then sell them at jacked up prices to people who just want to buy exactly that camera. Maybe it's for people who broke theirs and don't want to learn about a new camera - I'm not sure.

You'll notice that if you look closely, the s95 is being sold not directly by amazon, but by a 3rd party (PORTABLE GUY).

The s90 is selling for $475 on amazon through 3rd party merchants - it's not a better camera than the s95. The Canon sd780 was Canon's first "super small" camera, and it wasn't a good camera. The reviews even ripped it, and reviews usually say "oh it's so great!". Also, I owned one, and I returned it it was so bad. It's currently selling for $500.

Pretty much every older discontinued model of camera is on amazon selling for above it's original list price.

Hey, that S90 is a bargain...An Amazon 3rd party currently has a new A590IS for $409.

The A590 is not a bad little camera (I have two of them), but for sure it's not the near equal of an S90.

I'm pretty sure you can't.

On the s100, the benefit of f/2.0 is only available at full wide. On the s95 , full wide is 28mm but on the s100 full wide is 24mm. If you try to zoom in to 28mm to reduce the barrel distortion in a photograph, you loose the ability and benefit of f/2.0.

So no f/2.0 at 28mm on the s100. This was one of the loudest complaints from those of us anticipating the s100. The s105 (if released) should be a marked improvement.

Econ 101 indeed! Simple supply and demand; ancient wisdom. The supplier is traditionally granted the advantage, by the financially advantaged, in a free market situation.

SO you are saying every S100 is manufactured with this defect, and the selling feature of 24mm with tremendous barrel distortion? I find that hard to believe..

Yeah it's econ 101, supply and demand.

But if you look at the sales figures the S100 is in the top 10 but the S95 is forty something so it's clear what the more popular camera is.

That said....

I paid $303 (new) for my S100 and I felt the price was about right may be a little high.

I paid $229 for my S95 and felt like I got a bargain.

Even though S100 out specs the S95 in every way, I keep on going back to the S95 just based on the better pictures I get out of it.
