Lens suggestion for 7D
May 23, 2012

I recently purchased the 7D to replace my 40D. I noticed that the current lens seems to be too slow for this camera (Canon 28-135mm) or maybe I like to invest in a new lens. I'm average photographer (using manual and sometimes automatic mode) to shoot equal amounts indoor and outdoor. Most of the shots are of my boys horsing around. I like to stick with the Canon lens around $1500. Any suggestions?

With your current 28-135 have you noticed a particular focal length that you tend to use more often? Say between 28 and 50 or 70 and 135?

Since most lenses that are of a higher caliber tend to have less of a focal range I ask.

Off the cuff I'd say the EF-S 17-55 IS f/2.8 (fast but not much range) $1000, the EF-S 15-85 f/4-5.6 (not fast, but good range) $700 would be 2 do-it-all lenses.

I'd recommend the EF-S lenses on the short end because they will yield superior optics for an APS-C sensor.

Next would be the EF 24-70 f/2.8 L (first version) or the EF 24-105 f/4 L, the latter being closer to what you have as far as range.

It's entirely possible you're looking at 2 lenses to replace what you currently have.

I really love me 24-105 f/4 L it's a bit heavy but works for most everything.

Sounds like a 24-105 f/4L or 17-55 f/2.8 would be great for you.

I recommend you rent both for 3 days @ lensrentals.com and you'll know you picked right!

With 1500...
In reply to joyt, May 24, 2012

With luck you can get two lenses - i am quite happy with my 10-22 + 24-105 combo...

If you just need some wider wide angle for indoors a 15-85 could do the job - just one lens under 1000

Another vote for the 24-105L. It's my most used lens. It's a good compromise for photos and videos. IS works great for videos and lens is sharp for photos.

I compared the 17-55 and 24-105 and decided on the 17-55 - it was definitely sharper than the 24-105s I tried and I needed it more for the wide end on the 7D than the telephoto end and the extra speed. The primary reason for getting the 17-55 was a trip to Italy where I knew I'd be shooting indoors where they don't allow flash or tripods. I later complimented it with a 70-200L f4 IS. I have yet to run into a situation where the missing 56-69mm range causes me to miss shots.

10-22mm, 17-55mm, 60mm macro and 70-200 F4 are all excellent lenses on the 7D. If you choose from that set for the range that you most use you can't go far wrong.

get sigma 17-50 OS. this lens is apparently very close to 17-55 and cheaper, and has better light transmission.

the rest of the money can go to 85 F1.8 prime.

The EFs 16-85
In reply to joyt, May 25, 2012

For about $700us & it's a sharp good all purpose lens for the uses you describe.

The dearer lenses are more for if you get into the hobby of photography & could be a waste of money for just memory shots.

Which one are you referring to 85 f1.8 prime? I can't find that model on Canon's website.

Scratch that. I found it.

There's a 15-85 or 17-85. Which one are you recommending?

The 85/1.8 is a pretty sweet lens, one of Canon's cheapest. Sharp and fast-focusing w/ nice bokeh.

I have
24-105 L F4
17-55 IS F2.8
18-135 IS
and 15-85 IS

Which one would I least want to do without.

The 15-85 IS

If you are only going to have one lens then this is the best choice IMO.

Maybe not quite as sharp as the 24-105 or the 17-55 but still VG.

I agree, I have a similar line-up of lenses (also 50mm f1.4 and 10-22) but if I had to pick one lens from my kit bag to last me the rest of time, it would be my 15-85mm. If I had a FF camera I would go for the 24-105 but on a crop like 7D that's a just a bit to long at the bottom end and the extra width of the 15-85 is more important (to me).

If I'm going on a trip and I don't want to carry multiple lenses for my 7d I tend to take the Tamron 18-270.

Not the best optically but the range is very useful and the image stabilisation works very well.

If you're after better IQ, and had been thinking about taking two lenses you could consider taking something like a 70-300 and a G1X, to save having to change lenses all the time. The G1X is cheap compared to some lenses, good for IQ according to reports but not if you need fast focussing.

I have a G12 (bought before the G1X came out) which I use to supplement my 7d on trips and sometimes I even leave the 7d at home to save weight.
