T3/1100D banding? Read-out glitch? Need help I.D.ing these artifacts
May 23, 2012

Hi, I'm trying to troubleshoot some artifacting that's been showing up on my friend's Canon T3 (1100D)... My first guess is that it's a sensor read-out / banding gremlin, but I'm looking for help!

Sample images here:

(Canon T3 w/ factory firmware: set to "P" mode with built-in flash, JPEG "S2" 1920x1280, triggered via DSLR Remote Pro)

p.s. The camera was problematic all day this past weekend on location, but we've been unable to re-create the problem in the office today :S

Canon EOS 1100D (EOS Rebel T3 / EOS Kiss X50)

Have you tried a different memory card?

Looks to me like corrupted files.

Thanks, do you suppose the problem is linked to the camera being tethered and triggered via laptop?

yes, my first impression as well is corrupted files. Given that it was tethered, that's a source of errors if it was not the memory card.
perhaps the cable had a bad contact?

Anyway, test camera back and forth with a freshly formated memory card that is good. If that doesn't show any errors, it's not the camera per se.

Thanks photonius. Yeah, we didn't have much luck re-creating the glitch when the camera was shooting directly to a card... so it sounds like the latest consensus is that we've got corrupted files because of the cable or laptop.

Cheers!

I'm confused! Were the scrambled shots that you posted from shots saved to a memory card or saved to the laptop? I am not aware that the EOS Utility can save an image to the computer instead of the memory card in the camera. Where did the corrupt images come from: memory card or computer?

It's a T3 with no memory card tethered via USB to a PC laptop running DSLR Remote Pro.

I agree. Cable or laptop issue.
