seems many stores are listing it now
In reply to richarddd, May 21, 2012

many stores in Japan seem to be listing it at around a discounted price of 90,000 yen, down from the retail price of 125,000 yen.

list price in Japan is $275 more than the Amazon US price, but the discounted price is $165 less.

wonder if other stores in the US will sell it at a discounted rate.

Ouch. Lots of things you can consider for that money... A new e-m5, an aps-c enthusiast camera, a 70-200mm f4L, a new plasma tv, rent for a month plus groceries... Looks great on paper, but not that great on my secondary system.

Considering the debacle with the first two X lenses, I won't buy one at any price until there is a clear consensus of user satisfaction with this lens. If the lens proves to be very good and with consistent performance then my top price would be $800. Maybe next year!

I suspect Pany will heavily discount this lens as a kit lens with GH3. They will sell alot if GH3 + 12-35 is close to price of EM5+12-50.

I suspect you are right: part of the reason for this price may be to make the GH3+12-35 bundle look like a great bargain.

How so? I paid roughly that for my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 for APS-C back in 2007. Today Nikon sells the same lens for over $1,400. The full frame Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 is even pricier at almost $1,900.

Also consider the price of lenses like the Panasonic 7-14mm, Olympus 9-18mm, etc. These lenses have sold very well, and I suspect that this one will too.

Will I buy one? I'd really like to, but first I'd probably need to sell my Nikon gear. Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with the price of this new lens, other than the fact that I can't afford it. At least not this year. Maybe next.

I guess Canon and Nikon are stupid to have been selling 24-70/2.8 lenses for $1500 for a number of years now. Sony really stupid at $2000. None of those with IS either. And those are street prices...

Selling things only for the largest market isn't sensible. By your logic the 7-14 shouldn't exist, yet it is the primary reason some of us even considered entering m43.

I'll wait and see what the actual street price is and what the performance of the lens is before I call anything stupid. If it has broken OIS like the previous X lenses then it isn't worth $50. If it has good OIS and lives up to the samples provided so far then it is a pretty easy sale north of $1000. Fast zooms aren't cheap, and the smaller the market the more expensive they are. The people who use them are already paying this kind of money.

You are right about one thing, Panasonic won't have a huge market for this lens - and that's just fine. It's about creating a system and not every component in the system is suppose to sell to the masses.

GH2 body only was $999 and the 14-140mm alone was $849 so the kit price of $1499 = $349 discount.

GH3 is body is going to be at least $999, potentially more if it's weather sealed. If the 12-35mm is really going to be $1299, then we're looking at $1999 if it's the same $300ish discount. Maybe $1799/1899 if we're lucky.

and not a regular MSRP price. I agree its overpriced if MSRP. Perhaps they will sell it at kit discount with a GH3?

Totally different market, I think.

It's MFT, a lot smaller than Dx/5Dx-waving hordes of Nikon/Canon people and this already smaller market is - generally speaking, of course - also based on cheaper prices, I think.

But hey, I might be totally off, more power to Panasonic if they will sell tons of this lens at $1300 but I highly doubt it.

I thought the same thing when Sony priced their Nex Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 lens at $999. But it keeps selling out and they even RAISED the msrp to $1100 and it's still selling out. People also complained that the price was high for a lens that is not full frame, but the users have voted with their dollars.

Judging by the early reviews on the 12-35mm, I'm positive Panasonic will have trouble keeping up with demand. I do wish it was cheaper too, but it looks like they built a stunning performer in a smallish package.

One could hope it will follow the 7-14 model. Introduced at $1350, now under $1000.

Angry much? Or just frustrated for waiting, and wanting?

There are many not moving from DSLRs to ยต4/3 for not having fast zooms. Notice the new names on the boards lately?

a very good point

if Panasonic really goes ahead and play that game then I have to admit they would be very clever to do so. They would use the 12-35 combo with the GH3 to make it a lot more alluring to customers as a package and it would certainly give the OM-D heavy competition.

Say if this Lens with the GH3 went for around 1800$ I think that wouldn't be a bad marketing package.
