Hi,

I'm sure it's going to be a goodie, nonetheless a plastic mount! well I'd rather pay a tad more for a metal one.

They must be looking to knock down the vignetting as this lens on those specs has a larger filter ring the the FA 50 f1.4

Yeah, pretty much all the Pentax 50's made since the introduction of the "M" series are 49mm. Only the A50/1.2 and a couple of the macro versions are 52mm. I actually wonder if this might have been to facilitate sharing caps and filters with the kit lens? Although I suppose if they were going to do that, they would have done so with the 35/2.4 too.

Will be out for july 2012.

Price : 249$.

Ouch, seems high given the plastic mount, no hood, and no internal focus motor (comparing to the $220 Nikon). Still, I am bet it performs well and will be a nice lens.

The filter ring has no input to vignetting.!

The front element has the biggest affect and it looks small as a cheaper lens should therefore vignetting should be worse than the 50.14 at the same aperture.

Finally.

Sounds promising and if anything like the DA35 2.4, it will be a solid performer. I just got my f50 1.7, so I'm out of this search.

I don't think the one additional aperture blade would make a difference, either.

I also hope the DAL50 is as fast to focus as the older F/FA models and as fast as the 35 2.4.

I wish Pentax would get behind their primes and offer the K-30 or k-5 even with a two prime kit consisting of the DA35 2.4 and DAL50. Plastic mount or not, I'm sure fans would appreciate a set with top-notch optics. No depth guage, but again, OPTICS!

Well, perhaps not the ring itself, but surely the potential for vignetting is a major concern in deciding what size to make the filter ring? And since most other Pentax 50mm lenses take 49mm filters, the fact that this one doesn't - but physically could - might be evidence that in fact the front element on this in fact slightly larger than it might have been with previous designs of similar maximum aperture. That is, if the lens did in fact have a smaller maximum aperture than it should for a 50/1.8, it would indeed vignette as much as or more than other lenses, but then, it should be able to take 49mm filters without vignetting any further, just as is the case for other Pentax 50mm lenses. So why wouldn't they have given it a 49mm filter ring?

I think 49mm is more historical than logical.

indeed most of the more recent designs have required a stepped barrel to get down to 49mm.

It easier to fit a filter thread matching the barrel dimensions which in all mi zooms outsizes any optical requirements (focal divided by aperture).

i.e a 50mm f.18 needs a front element of 28mm !!!

so 49mm or 52mm is a design decision not an optical one.
