Very thorough UV filter comparison tests (and C-PLs)
May 20, 2012

I've just added this link to a UV filter thread, but, as no one else has posted it, it's occurred to me that it, perhaps, isn't as well known as I assumed, so I'm posting it here for wider consumption:

http://www.lenstip.com/113.1-article-UV_filters_test.html

They also did a thorough test of polarisers, which is very informative:

Thanks for the reminder, it was posted many many times when filter questions came up.
Anyway, there are more tests, it's all compiled here:

Car makers routinely strap crash-dummies into new cars and smash them up in order to test the effectiveness of seat belts, airbags, crumple zones etc. Where are the tests subjecting lenses to drops, particle-laden winds, dog licks, sticky fingers, sneezes, spitting cobras, dusty photo bags, with filter and without, and showing how a filter actually protects a lens from irrepairable damage?

Quick question, guys. My local store carries only the HOYA Standard and HD UV filters. I haven't found many reviews of the HD UV filters online, but are they really worth the extra money?

Why test something that's obvious?

I'll tell you what. I'm take my lens with filters and test them, you take your lenses w/o filters and test them, then we'll compare notes.

Or how about this. You can try to scratch my lens w/a filter on, I'll try to scratch your lens with no filter.

Game?

the lenstip HD tests are linked here:
http://photonius.wikispaces.com/Filters

anyway, if you look carefully, they are not that much more expensive than say Hoya digital pro1, and the B+W MRC (highly rated) I think are still more expensive.
I have had good results by ordering from ebay.

One clear filter that isn't in the lenstip UV filters tests but is worth considering is a Marumi DHG "Lens Protector" filter. It doesn't filter UV light, but it is a nice multi-coated but inexpensive filter to protect the front element of your lens from flying sand or salt spray:

You should realize that it's 3yrs old and has been discussed ad nauseum when it was news and now it is still referred to in many other forums, mainly the beginner's forums where they often discuss the merits/myths of UV filters.

Relax, Hank. Most topics in this forum have been discussed ad nauseum anyway.

Have you been assessed for Asperger's Syndrome, or any other condition that limits your social skills and insight?

Perhaps you should have paid more attention to my use of the word 'perhaps'?

A more polite reply would have been along the lines of 'Yes, Lord Cocklecarrot, that's an excellent article, that has been linked to many times before'.

As I intimated, sufferers of Asperger's exhibit a reduced ability to understand how their conduct is perceived by others.

Your initial reply was rude, condescending, and aggressive. Rather inappropriate on a forum devoted to the discussion of photography, imnsvho.

With treatment you can learn to adapt your behaviour so that you can at least pass yourself off as a normal human being. Let me know if you're interested, I can PM you details of a variety of organizations that specialise in this field.
