Sigma 30mm 1.4 arrived, first highlight picture

After the arrival of the Sigma 30mm lens i started experimenting with the aperture and this picture of my youngest daughter came out of it. I think i'm going to like this new lens.

Good morning Fox.

You'll love the lens, but as it is a very fast lens, you must have some control over exposure, or you will blow all your photos.

You chose for this photo F1.4, and shutter speed of 1/180 with +1.3 EV. That's too much. You're overexposing.

Either you expose normally or underexpose. You must increase your shutter speed, and expose to the left, or use an ND filter. Your photo is very much blown. I'm sure your histogram shows that. Take a look at the skin colour and background colour. This does not do justice to your daughter.

Try to underexpose, and you'll see the difference on this photo.

...maybe it is supposed to be a high key portrait.

I have a 30mm and I really like it's depth of field and its capabilities. It is most definitely my best lens and I go to it when I want to do my best stuff (I just have a kit lens and the 70-300 otherwise). The thing that I don't like is the fact that on my e-600 I have a lot of trouble getting my focus points consistently right... Often times they just seem random - even when I have it set for a single point... I am hoping that it will work better with the new EM-5 I have on order. You can see a series of high key pics that I recently posted that I shot with the 30mm (it is still on the front page of posts)... my shots used to look more like yours here - kind of blown out... but I have learned to with experience (I guess) to blow the background out but not so much the subject... just keep practicing!

Yes. I know it's supposed to be high key, but, it looks a bit overdone, because everything is washed out. Even the child's face lacks definition.
But, it's only my opinion.

It's supposed to be highkey and...

yes it's a matter of taste. I like the result and even overdone the washed out effect a bit. It's was taken in raw so i could have done it the other way around also. We can argue about taste but fact is this lens makes it possible.
