Weekend Pix for the week ending 19-20 May
May 18, 2012

Well, seeing as Larry is on leave, someone had to step up to the plate (whatever that is - doesn't come up much in Cricket).

Ok. Same rules as always: Show us three of your best shots from the last week and this weekend. And as always, have fun.

White Clifts of Moen
In reply to SigmaChrome, May 18, 2012

The closest you come to rocks in Denmark are the Chalk Clifts at Stevns and Moen. At Moen the clifts are about 100 m tall. And due to the chalk the water has a very special blue color.

Please enjoy!

I like the wild feeling in the first one. I like the second as well, but for some reason it causes me some discomfort...like I'm going to meet a vampire or something

Thanks Rick.
Yeah, it really does look freaky. That's why I tried to enhance it in B&W.

DP2: Valley of Fire NV
In reply to SigmaChrome, May 19, 2012

We spent the past 2 days in the Valley of Fire, Nevada, which indeed was.... hot. First day windy and over 107F degrees, yesterday was a 'mild' mid-90s in the shade.... but there was no shade on the way to the "Fire Wave" I didn't make it the whole way, we turned around 2 posts short from (and a steep incline at) the "Wave." I feel like the climber who didn't quite make the summit, but hopefully there will be another cooler and shorter trek. I'll write more about my gripes with the trail posts going in.... park people have take you in a looong way around and down from the 'official' parking area. It's become so popular, they MUST improve access IMHO.

I'm going to try it next time (hopefully in winter) UP from the wash below it, which supposedly takes you to the base.....

Now to the Lost City Museum here in Overton (archaeological stuff) and on to Zion in Utah.
Best regards, Sandy

Moire in Architecture, paper, coffee
In reply to SigmaChrome, May 19, 2012

Two versions of the same shot, second one 1/2 size. Moire everywhere, along with the drama. This is the roof of the center atrium of the Smithsonian museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery, off the mall near 7th St NW, Washington DC. It's a heavy rigid structure that flows like a sail over the atrium. Reminds me of the atrium roof of the British Museum, London. Interesting to see that downsizing trades one arrangement of moire for another.

There is a nice (but expensive) snack bar there with tables in the atrium. Second image is looking into the cavernous recesses of a wadded-up paper napkin.

Later, my wife and I went to Starbucks, near home. Third shot is that nice starbucks coffee (my first macro coffee bubbles shot, and probably not my last).
Overall we had a very nice day out and about. It was perfect weather too.

I converted the full-res shot to B&W. Moire (probably best if I call it color aliasing) disappeared. The shot works well as black and white because it's all about form and motion.

Hi Tom,

that is noise, I guess from too much fill light. There is no moiré in your image, just noise. Try RAW conversion once more with less fill light, therefor adjust contrast and shadow and leave fill light at max. 0.2.
