Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens?
May 15, 2012

Hi Folks,

Anyone used this item, Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens.

I was going to buy some Kenko tubes but someone mentioned the 500D. Just wondered what those that have used it thought of it?

I am planning to use on my Nikon 24-70 / 70-200 / 28-300.

Anyone know best place to buy in UK? Anyone got one to sell in UK?

Thanks and regards,

Mark.

Both can give good results if used with the right lenses. It depends a bit on the combination.
Anyway, here you can read a bit about how they work:

I am planning to use on my Nikon 24-70 / 70-200 / 28-300.

The 500D should give some nice magnification on the 70-200 or 28-300.
And you get decent working distance (40-50 cm).

The Kenko tubes would work better on the 24-70 in terms of magnification, but not sure how well this zoom would do in terms of image quality.
The tubes would do well on a 50mm prime or macro.

Anyone know best place to buy in UK? Anyone got one to sell in UK?

Thanks and regards,

Mark.

The 500D is a +2 dioptre lens which is very weak - exactly what you want on a long lens, but not very effective on a short lens.

Supplementary lenses do have some advantages over tubes - no light loss, can be fitted/removed more easily in the field, and they keep the lens working within its design parameters. But they have one major disadvantage, which is that they give you a very small range of working distances. Maximum distance for a +2 dioptre lens is always 500 mm, regardless of the main lens; minimum varies but would typically be around 300 mm. So that's a nice distance to work from but at the same time very limiting as you don't have a lot of flexibility. If the rare butterfly you've spotted is 600 mm away - too bad.

Optically the 500D is excellent, I just have reservations about how practical they are. And they're not cheap - that much cash would make a good down payment on a proper macro lens.

Thanks photonius and Steve.

Very useful information supplied.

At this stage I am mainly interested in the 500D as I see it being a flexible addition and something that I can have in my bag / pocket and on Vacation.

Anyone got any shots using the 500D please?

Thanks and regards, Mark.

I recall there were some shots on the Canon lens forum. Also, I have a few test shots on my site above - but no real world examples.

Thanks and regards, Mark.

A couple of 58mm 500D shots with the lowly Canon 100-300USM lens.

And a couple with the 77mm version, 100-400L lens.

Regards,

Roger

Good luck finding one!

I have been waiting for a long while to buy one, but it is out of stock everywhere in the US, including Canon's own site. Only amazon seems to have some at double the normal price, at that price you might as well get a real macro.
