5Dmk3 vs D800E Part 1
May 14, 2012

Ok Guys
Here we go

I have been playing with both cameras for the last 5 days

Those 3 picture were taken with both camera...

With the D800 I used the 85mm 1.8 G
while the 5D had the 85mm 1.2

All the picture were edited in Lr 4.1 with minor small adjustments

Link for the full size jpg

and here the link for the Raw
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-hVwkta-zXKeGphYVRaTFN3VjQ

General comments:

Image Quality: Bot camera deliver great images
The D800E files with no AA gives stellar results at low and high iso setting

Camera Body: Both feel really very solid

Auto Focus: Advantage 5D,the D800 was pretty slow in achieving and locking the focus

Metering: Slightly advantage for the 5D, the D800 has a bit of a tendency to over expose low contrast scenes and underexpose the high contrasting one

Auto Iso: Much better implemented in the D800

With the D800 I got a much better rate of sharp picture when I set the speed at 1/160

Screen: the D800 ha a horrible green cast hue
nothing to do with the file that delivers!

Silent Shooting in the 5D is amazing while on the D800 its just useless!

More comments and picture to come in the next days

Thanks for listening

Ettore

The Nikon 85mm F1.8 not only is one stop slower lens but it also a non-pro lens with slower focusing motor/mechanism.

The Nikon 85mm F1.4G would have focused much faster so it is not accurate to attribute slower auto focus speed to camera body alone.

No: the canon 85 1.2 is known as one of the slowest focussing lenses!

And the new Nikon 1.8G which he used is both latest tech, and has much less glass to move around. So I would expect the lenses to be in favour of the Nikon.

May I ask what metering mode you were using?

Nice work so far BTW.

Interesting comparison and I'll be watcing for more images.

What's your opinion on skin tones and colors between the two?

Ok, I didn't realize that it was MKI version that was used.

The 85 1.2 still have the advantage when used in lower lighting which all those examples were made.

IMO, D800 produced healthier skin tone...

Personally i also prefer nikon color too, looks more vibrant and lively. But i suspect canon is closer to actual one (based on the white background), however the skin tone also has slight purple/pink cast.

Interested to hear TS comment. Cheers~

Contrarily I like the canon rendering of skin tone better.
(BUT: That should be possible to adjust in post).

I tested in low light D800 vs 1Ds Mark III using 50mm f/1.4 lenses and D800 didn't focus properly. The outer focusing points were the worst. With LiveView Face-Detect D800 focused perfectly though - exactly on the eye.

With 1Ds there is aperture limit setting. This can be used as very good auto-ISO -

set the setting to allow the camera to increase ISO if needed, set minimal aperture that you want to use, then put camera in T mode. Now you will decide the speed and the camera will set the aperture and ISO. The aperture limit is very important, for example if you shoot sports and do not want to go bigger than 5.6.

I like both
Keep in mind that on the Nikon I have the auto WB pre corrected in camera

The default setting gives sepia skin tone (typical Nikon and which i personally hate)

I think in the first two images (the boy and the girl), Nikon's better DR came into play with much smoother transition of light and shadow.

But in mother and daughter picture both cameras did badly in highlight recovery on the forehead.
Great images from both cameras though.

The 5DIII files look more detail and more pop especially the high ISO ones.

I would have expected the absence of an AA filter on the D800E would have made it more detailed and sharper. Not so.

The first picture of the boy the D800 is set to ISO 220 giving it a higher ambience while the 5DIII is ISO 100 therefore you see smoother light and shadow. Also DR on both cameras peak around ISO 200 so this further disadvantge the 5DIII when it is only set at ISO 100.

Any sharpness and detail you're perceiving are imaginary. The images are scaled down to 1600 pixels, so they're both sacrificing a lot of detail - more so the D800.

Give it a rest. ISO 200 will introduce more noise sp there is no disadvantage. There are no shadows being pushed.

The D800'd DR advantage is 2 stops in this range anyway.

I agree.

Nicely done. One wonders what it will take for the people at Nikon to get the message that their OOC colors generally suck, cerainly auto WB.

The first shot is a great example of the flatter rendering of the 85L which gives much better detail & tone in the hair this is the huge advantage for portraits. Nikon tends to crush the darks with there 85 lenses requiring fill light to overcome the poor performance. Leica 50f1.4 & Hasselblad 80mm perform similar to canon 85L.
