All I've read is good stuff about the 16-35VR. I'm thinking about buying it also. "Metta World Peace" is the self given name of an NBA basketball player who plays with the Los Angeles Lakers. For whatever reason that was the first thing that came to my mind when I read your screen name. Yes, the 16-35 gets excellent reviews much across the board.

Barrel distortion is cool, adds movement at times.

FWIW, be advised that not every copy is flawless.

My copy had a large blurred spot just off-center. This was not decentering--more likely a defect in the glass. After seeing my test shots the store took it back and returned it to Nikon for repair. After much delay the store advised that they still did not have it back. I canceled the order. Kudos to the store for their honorable handling of this matter. I trust that Nikon will make them whole.

At 16mm, no. There is not a problem other than getting enough of the image in sharp focus, due to low-light shooting.

Zooms are going to distort. Even the 24-70 has this kind of a problem. Simply, its not easy (not cheap anyway) to have a perfect lens that zooms and is very wide and has VR or is bright, etc, etc. At 16mm, unless you have a geometrical shape dead centered, you are going to have distortions (looking at the sphere in the background).

This lens is a good compromise. You can get a 14-24/2.8 if you want better.

Peace is something we should all aspire towards, very noble sentiment, you risk ridicule from rednecks but hey, makes it easy to spot a-holes.

I had one for a while and found it fairly weak at both extremes. 16mm shows quite a lot of distortion, 35mm is not as sharp as, say, a 24-70.

If you want a really good lens, the 16-35 is excellent if you are happy to treat it as something like an 18-30mm lens. Outside of that range is just a bonus.

Hi John

That's the comment I like to hear. I am ok to shoot just 18-30mm, as long as I know they are great across the aperture range, corner to corner sharpness, i would be fine ...

thanks again
