Is Lightroom 4.1 RC buggy?
May 12, 2012

Having trouble whenever I try to use selective editing tools. My computer seems to grind to a snail's pace after a few clicks and then even after i've finished the edit, things don't get better. To get back to normal speed I have to restart the computer.

This problem seems to coincide with the "upgrade" to 4.1, but I can't swear by that. Anyone else with the same experience?

Mine runs perfectly but what does this have to do with printing or printers?

Ummm...

I couldn't find the Lightroom forum, officer. My deepest apologies.

No thanks. I'll take my chances here. Hopefully, next time you won't be on duty.

The retouching forum is likely to find more people with views or information about Lightroom.

That will be very unlikely!

Thank you, Simon.

Look, I received five very nice replies to an earlier Lightroom enquiry. Figured it was only natural to come back here and hope the same people could help me with another question.

Quite surprised that someone would get upset, play forum cop and waste his and my time calling me out. The scoldy tone was a nice touch, as well.

My remedy
In reply to mervis50, May 14, 2012

I encountered similar (sluggish) performance when I updated to LR4. I quit using 1:1 previews and made sure the catalog was optimized regularly (weekly). Suddenly things were back to normal and the spinning beach ball or my iMac hardly ever shows up.

Having mentioned that, it does take a number of seconds when switching to the map or book modes the first time after opening LR4. Subsequent switching between sections is then far quicker.

LR4 is a much more capable but also expansive software. I wish we could remove those sections we don't need or don't use often. If I don't need the web, map, slideshow or book sections, it would be nice to "uninstall" them.

I hope my suggestions help you in any way. Good luck!

It's nice that you can now hide whichever ones you don't use, from appearing in the list of sections at the top of the screen. (I've hidden slideshow, and book.)

It's "as if" you had uninstalled them, in day-to-day working; except you could still get into them from the menu or by keyboard shortcuts.

I didn't know that.

There really are a gazillion features and possibilities in LR4. Especially using the option of command keys, so many additional features pop up. Be able to "hide" those sections is interesting.

I also have hidden "Web", I notice - I had since forgotten that it was even there!

...which goes to prove the point: you can just ignore whatever peripheral stuff is of no interest to you.

But in its basics, LR is laid out (and functions) in quite a pre-determined way - which you can either go along with, or else (and this will be unsuccessful) fight with.
