KEH
May 12, 2012

I sold my K20d to KEH and would like to share the experience. As this was my first time selling equipment to them The quote for the camera was obtain via their web site. Through the process, paper work is generated mailing info ownership affidavit etc. Once package was received by their purchasing dept. I received an email explaining the time frame when the camera will be inspected and the final price paid. They offer me $10 more than the online quote. A check was cut in about a day. All positive.

They're great to do business with, in both directions. I've bought thousands of dollars worth of gear there over the years, and sold a bit of it back. Always straightforward, fair and quick.

There is constant KEH representative at monthly Pasadena Bargain Camera Show. Once he gave me quite fair price for the super Tak 300/4 (I lost about $15 over the initial price I paid). Next time he quoted my flawless K-x with 18-55 and 55-300 lens kit at $400. I refused and a few weeks later easily sold it for $500 through PF Marketplace.
Just my 2 cents.

You do understand that KEH needs to make money as well right?

Personally I prefer to just sell locally using Craigslist, as painfully frustrating as it can be sometimes.

Of course, I do understand that they need to make money. But when they were offering $400 for double K-x kit the 55-300 were priced at $260 alone. And they were selling K-x with 18-55 kit for $450-$480 or so.
My point is: don't expect any philanthropy from them, they down price hard.

Not my experience with the K20 but then again I take care of my gear. Watch the movement on the PF of K20 bodies and see how fast they move. KEH unlike other venues isn't just window shopping wasting your time. They have the cash to back up the offer.

On vintage equipment, I think they are always fair in trade value and reasonable on resale given that you can completely trust their analysis of condition.

My most recent dealing with KEH involved an off-brand pTTL flash that was in excellent condition but did not communicate properly with the camera (not an uncommon situation with brands other than Metz and Pentax). The return process was painless and resulted in a 100% refund. In my opinion, KEH is the class of the used camera trade/sell business. The only thing they could do better is reorganize the website to make it easier to find what you are searching out.

On recent-release camera equipment (anything with a sensor), they face the challenges of any dealer. That is, unless the camera moves quickly it will lose considerable value in just a few months. They have to build in bigger margin because they face greater risk.

I agree. I have very positive experience with them when, buying, returning, even repairing lenses.

Another positive thing is their used equipment ratings. Regardless of the grade they posted for an item I always got better conditions than I expected.

Good to hear. I've always had positive experiences buying from them, but never have sold to them. Thanks for the info.

I agree 100%. I love their "Bargain" lenses since they truly are a bargain to me. The only thing I have to watch for is that lens caps aren't included unless they specifically say so.

I know them for at least 20 years.

Mr. King an Atlanta lawyer started it to get his hands on all the collectible goodies.

They are hit and miss like any other used camera peddler.
In the last few years they are much more "miss"
and quality control has gone down dramatically.

Their new staff is just knowledgeable anymore - too bad !

The inventory is dwindling and the prices they pay are never what they quote you
and when you don't accept their price they send it back uninsured.
I lost packages that way,
Sadly there is no alternative.

Most people have experienced by now that it is much better you sell " on the Marketplace " ... you will get a much better price that way.

Hope this helps

Again, they are a reseller. Can't really expect any different. They are taking a risk, they have to pay employees, rent building space, people returning merchandise, etc. Most resellers (like any store you go into) will try to get near 100% markup on most goods. Jewelry stores might be more like 500%. It just depends on the market, risks, etc.

I know the K-x double lens kit was only like $650 new if you found a deal on it around Christmas the year it came out, a price of $400 is pretty good considering. Also consider that you only got $100 more and have to take on the risk if the buyer doesn't receive the package, complains that something is broken, etc.

I sell all my own camera gear, but I am just saying.

OMG !

So it's not just me

Every time they have a problem with their website
they claim to be under attack.

Their system did not make it into this century that's for sure.

You can never ever get anybody on the phone or have them call you back.
...even if they say so in their answering bla bla ....
it you want to change an order or add something it is impossible.

Murphy's law rules all the way - once they get off track
there is only one way - d o w n h i l l

Adorama and B&H must be laughing themselves silly with those Hicks.

( and yes they all know each other from the same trade shows they attend for years without end ).
The only real new player is "the Marketplace" and thank the Almighty for it.

Just remember one thing:

There is no thing such as a friendly used camera dealer
(that is an oxymoron).

... in fact when I know that my stuff is 100%
and first rate,
why should I have somebody else take the cut ?

... of course if your equipment is riddled with " As is " issues
selling to a reseller ( who does not know his stuff anymore )
that is another option

But then again the upright "marketplace " person

also stands his ground ... and answers all theses ( pesty ) questions truthfully
