It is official as far as I am concerned, the D800 is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD! It is criminal what you can do with this camera and every time I use it, the better I get to know it and the better it performs.

Here are some images taken today of a variety of subjects and a variety of lenses. Also, all shots pretty much a run through with generic quick post process and noise reduction. No big time spent on them, so, with more care they could be better, IMO.

Firstly, Dynamic range and what you can recover from shadows and make look like it isn't HDR.

D800 + 14-24 f2.8 @ f16. Nothing wrong with diffraction here!

These haystacks are about 5ft high.
D800 + 70-200 f2.8 VRII @ f4

D800 + 500 f4 VR @ f5
How do you like the "pop" or "3D" look!!

D800 + 300 f2.8 VRII + 1.4x TCII @ f5
Even "pop" with the 300 + TC!!

Now, I think this is ridiculous. Here is an Australian Lyrebird in the undergrowth almost dark. D800 + 70-200 f2.8 VRII 1/60sec f4 ISO6400!! handheld They say we need a tripod to see the D800 at it's best? Can it be better?

crop Look at the detail!!

D800 + 500 f4 VR f5.6, ISO6400!! 1/320sec, handheld!

DX crop

D800 + 500 f4 VR, f5, ISO6400!!, 1,250sec handheld

crop

D800 + 500 f4 VR, f6.3, ISO6400!!, 1/320ec handheld.

Great shots, beautiful detail. I will be taking my D800e out this weekend and can hopefully post some shots next week.

I too hear a lot of criticism of the 800(e) and most are unfounded or at least I have not run into anything but spectacular IQ and i am amazed by the detail over my previous camera, the 5D Mark ll.

Thanks for posting those.

It weighs 4kg and I can ususally hold it horizontal for 20-30secs, then rest for a few seconds and then go again.

Nice shots!

Thank you very much!

Case of double negative?

a) it is a common opinion big telephoto lenses cannot be used handheld
b) it has been argued the D800 could not successfully be used handheld

I guess this is a case of 'double negative' actually meaning one positive

Good work!

(and pretty nice camera too)

Handholding

I often shoot TV shows for various newspapers. Once I managed to borrow a AF-S 400/2.8 VR from a collegue to replace my usual 300/2.8 + TC14 combo.

Nice!

As so often we were sitting among the spectators in the studio and just before teh show started the floor manager of the evening told us photographers 'no monopods allowed' (most often it is allowed).

Not so nice.

That was three painful hours with lots of handholding D3 + 400/2.8 (plus one D3 with 70-200) and doing my best not to hit the person sitting in front of me with the lens.

I probably should go to the gym more often

Blown away indeed! I am too with my own results
In reply to Lance B, May 11, 2012

although mine aren't near yours! Love love love every bird photo and I am finding what you say about handholding etc. true too. I use the D800 and a 70-200 with the 2xIII TC and shoot the same as I did with the D700. The results though, are far superior! The detail is incredible! You've inspired me to post some now.

What surprises me about your images are your shutter speeds. I tried some with lower shutter speeds and the images are soft...not because of camera movement but because of bird movement. I'll include some in my post too and would love your comments on them...as certainly I would like to be able to shoot with lower shutter speeds. I tried very hard to wait until the bird was quiet, but they move so fast.

Thanks much for your inspiration!

Gorgeous work. i was about to say as usual... you and the D800 really seems to get along well and you have really locked that long lens technique down quite well it seems.

Keep posting.

Keep handholding the 400mm 2.8, and you won't have to worry about going to the gym anymore.
