Work around for Aperture plug-in issue.
May 10, 2012

Issue:

Image displayed in Aperture doesn't update after editing with an external plug-in.

Executive summary:

Launch the plug-in while Aperture is in quick-preview mode. After editing with an external plug-in/editor, the preview is correctly updated.

Details:

Last night I installed the 10.7.4 OS X update. I then checked to see if Aperture still had the problem with displaying previews after external edits (unlikely to have gotten fixed but possible).

To my surprise, the issue appeared to have been resolved. Then I realised I hadn't followed my normal workflow for the test, which is to adjust the exposure before calling the external plug-in. This means I'm always in normal edit mode when I call plug-ins. But for the quick test, I'd simply invoked the plug-in while Aperture was in quick-preview mode (which can be toggled on/off with the P key) and noticed that when returning to Aperture after the edit, the preview got updated correctly.

Note, this stops working again if you add further Aperture edits to the retuned file, and then call the plug-in again, but that's quite rare for me so this trick works for most of my edits.

Just in case that last part isn't clear here's a table:

Not enabling quick-preview before external edit:

1) No Aperture Edit -> External Edit. Bad preview.
2) Aperture Edit, -> External Edit. Bad preview.
3) ...External edit -> Aperture Edit. Good preview
4) ...External edit -> Aperture Edit -> External Edit. Bad preview

Enabling quick-preview before external edit:

1) No Aperture Edit -> External Edit. Good preview.
2) Aperture Edit, -> External Edit. Good preview.
3) ...External edit -> Aperture Edit. Good preview
4) ...External edit -> Aperture Edit -> External Edit. Bad preview

Number 4 can be fixed by creating a new version, but is a rare case for me.

I have found that simply zooming in and then out updates the preview.

Not for me. It updates while zoomed, but once zoomed out again it returns to non-updted preview.
