The Olympus OM-D EM-5 is for sure a fine camera. Actually the best micro four thirds camera ever made according to many sources

Don't feel bad, Kirk
In reply to Chris Oly, May 9, 2012

It cost me $2100, by the time I added the grip and 45 1.8. Worth every cent, too.

Yes, the shutter sound reminded me of the E1. Quiet and solid. It says - you just took a great photo, even when you didn't.

The hiss - that's the difference between internet hypercriticism and reality.

And just wait until you try out the IS system. One of the few times that a feature actually lives up to the manufacturer hype.

And I finally figured out what that hissing sound is - it's the EM5 hissing at all the people who paid extra for OIS. But, as befits it's elegant and understated nature, it does this as quietly as possible.

I give him 2 months.

Kirk -- resistance is futile. Just clean out the old stuff, and start blogging about the wonder that is the EM5.

He surely has the right three lenses picked out with the 12mm f2, 25mm f1.4 and 45mm f1.8.

And comparing the shutter sound to that of the E-1 is definitely high praise.

One thing that amazes me about Kirk is his ability to write interesting pieces relating to all things photography day after day in his blog. Impressive.

I also appreciate his openly subjective reviews on cameras, where he describes his experience of a cameras handling and performance without myriad test results, basically an everyman's review, but written by someone with extensive professional experience. Even this relative neophyte can relate to his down-to-earth reports, and they're fun to read as well. The man has a gift for communication.

And, fanboys be forewarned, he also readily changes his position when exposed to new information or has handled a new camera. As he's said, its as if fans have established these little camps each rallying around its own little flag, and this is simply nonsense. Get to the truth as you experience it and report it.

Works for me. I await his true review of the E-M5 with interest, should be a fun read.

Kirk, looking forward to your thoughts on the E-M5. Good luck on getting one, my Amazon pre-order is now over 3 months old. Let me know if you find a dealer who have one in black with the 12-50!

I don't know about that. People may be playing (and counter-playing) with availability data.

I'm in a queue in waiting for OM-D kit: 3rd for silver, 7th for black. I'm happy whatever comes first. The latest estimate is about two weeks, sigh!

Off topic question on shutter and m43.

Is a silent shutter ever in the works for m43, or is not possible?

It's close
In reply to Pikme, May 9, 2012

The EM5's shutter has a very muted sound, much like the E1 shutter. And blessedly free of the high frequency pop of many dslr's that carries such a long way.

So much so that I had to pull out my old E1 and fire off a few. I'd say the E1 sounded maybe a wee bit more luxurious, but it's real close, sort of like comparing the door closing sound of a Mercedes to a Rolls. If there's any difference, it's lost in how much better both are than anything else.

Yes, you'll love the EM5's shutter sound.
