Raccoon mom and baby
Raccoon mom and baby
May 8, 2012
In a shaded tree canopy in the wetlands here in South Florida, I came upon this momma raccoon and her cute fuzzy baby...couldn't help but take some shots (camer: Sony A580, Minolta 300mm F4 APO lens with 1.4x TC):
Here are both of them together, giving me the cautious eye (F5.6, 1/400, ISO1600):
Then, moving off to avoid danger (F5.6, 1/500, ISO1000):
The silly fuzzy little baby following behind mom (F5.6, 1/500, ISO1250):
He actually started coming my way again for a bit (F5.6, 1/500, ISO1000):

Nice pictures Justin... I had some mother & baby raccoon encounters but they seems to be a little aggressive.
Thank you for posting.
Nice shootin Justin! A great find. I've never seen a Raccoon youngster before. Excellent photos. You made the most of it with that great combo you've got.
Question: What do you do all week?
Answer: Mon to Fri. Nothing, Sat & Sun I rest!
Very nice and unusual set, congrats.
I'd give them a chance here:
It's a Nikon forum, but all cams from all brands can compete, so why not?
Lol, I need an upgrade, my Nikon D6x is a too limited gear!
Way to go Justin, keep 'em coming. Always enjoy your shots from S. Florida.
Thank you Marcelo. We are surrounded by quite a few raccoons, and they have become rather accustomed to people. I've got 4 or 5 that visit my backyard nightly to swim in my pool and eat leftover bird seed. The mothers no longer seem to have that same fear of letting us near their babies - indeed some of them will march right up to you with 3 cubs in tow. This one was in a more wild environment, but suburbs were nearby, and likely this one spends some time in backyards, trash cans, and streets...so it probably has seen people a lot.
Thank you Vitto. Appreciate the link and the suggestion. I'm not sure I'd feel entirely comfortable even in open challenges in some other forums - I'm quite sure 99% of the boards wouldn't care and are open to all brands, but all the camera boards have that 1% who are always looking to rip on another brand...and I don't want to ruin their nice challenge thread with any silliness from those folks.
Nice one Justin...I'd say you were certainly getting the eye in that fourth one...some great shots...had a couple roaming around here, but some skunks seemed to take over. Would rather have the racoons...my car wasn't smelling too good the other day.
