Mini Review D3200 vs D5100 with Samples
May 8, 2012

I wrote up a blog post for this mini review/comparison and posted some examples: http://www.portraitsf.com/blog/nikon-d3200-vs-d5100/

If you wish to play around with some full size RAW images: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8vaRXGJnkiHcFliQUU1eWV1dzQ Included are NEF's of Alcatraz Island shot from Ina Coolbrith park in San Francisco. 50mm 1.8G @ f7.1 on the D3200 & D5100.

Also a Bay Bridge comparison from the park is also in the zipped file. 50mm @ f8 on the D5100 & f5.6 & f8 DNG's for the D3200 (my 5.6 shot on the D5100 was miss-focused, thought comparing the F5.6 & F8 D3200 shots might be fun for someone looking for diffraction softening the image too, I didn't notice any).

So this post does't require you to just check out my blog post or download and compare RAW files yourself:

Nikon D3200 Nikon D5100 Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5

Yes Thanks a lot.

The sensors seems very similar. the one in the D5100 resolves high ISO a bit better.

But 24Mpixel is clearly more than 16 on the other hand...

Why are 100% crops from two different resolutions the same size?

And image #9 - the 6400 scene downscaled . . . Is that with the D3200?

A very useful review thank you for taking the time!

one thing that the old D3100 does and it drives me carzy is that if one is in single point focus mode. it is very easy to with thye palm of my hand touch the multiselector and move the focus point to thew right. Do you feele the stiffer buttons on the D3200 hepls against that? I do wonder why there is no way to lock the focus point selector not even in a menu, very annoying, at least to me.

Thanks. Appreciate your effort.

I handled and shot a few images on my own card with a D3200 at Best Buy. I checked the results at home and I was not impressed. I guess that the AA filter is a little to aggressive. Also, the D3200 just did not feel right in my hands.

I hope that if and when Nikon updates either the D5100, D7000 and/or D300s with the 24meg sensor, the results will be better. Unless, Nikon can give me a darn good reason to move up to a 24 megapixel sensor, I see no reason to sell my D7000 and D5100.

I am also not upgrading. With my D5100 and D7000 I never wanted more megapixels. Maybe better AF, more DR, better skintones. But megapixels was never a issue. If I upgrade it would only be if the D700 drops in price. Which actually has less megapixels.

For the blog I used a 1280x848 100% crop. Thats what you are seeing more of the scene itself with the D5100. Smaller starting image size.

The ISO 6400 scene downscaled is the D5100. Downscaled to that size there really isn't a difference between the two. I just wanted to give an idea of the complete scene (like I did for the completed alcatraz & bay bridge shot).

I was talking about the 100 percent crops above in your post. The 32K and 51K crops are the same size. The 3200 should show less of the scene but the angular view is the same in both. They also weren't shot at the same shutter speed so it is hard to tell if there are differences in contrast between the sensors . . .

The images are different sizes. Click on them a couple of times to zoom in to full size.
