so you have a gallery ?
May 7, 2012

Had a look through my own gallery looking to prune some out,
got to say I am surprised at what images attract the most hits
not what I would choose as my 'best', although I'm fond of 2 of them

What about you, do you see the same in your top 5 ?

at 85 views, err huh ?

at 66 views, umm ok, Bill liked it...

at 65 views

at 55 views

at 54 views, I actually like this one... !

I found that here, as in Flickr where I host my images, an image will get many more views if it looks interesting as a thumbnail. No matter how good it is, if the thumbnail doesn't POP, it just won't get the views.

Having said that, here's my top 5

The thumbnail issue was brought up quite a while ago in the contests. People wont look at it unless the thumbnail looks good.

I've had a gallery at Smugmug for 8 years since I bought an E-1. No idea which photos have been most popular, but my most popular recent gallery has been

with 5516 hits. Within that gallery, the most popular photo (231 hits) has been

Thanks Riley! I had never noticed that.

All is relative, but I wonder how so many people stumble onto my gallery. What I see emerging as a trend:

  • images discussed in threads do good

  • challenge entries do better (but none made the top 5 below)

  • snapshots taken with a new camera that some people are curious about, do best - see below.

None of my DSLR shots made the cut!

The statistics of my views are warped.
In reply to Rriley, May 8, 2012

Still ranking high as most viewed shots (with 700+ views) are photos from a single and very old gallery of concert shots I did with E-330 and ZD50. I did not have much online back then.

This series was noticed by the band itself, and I think they attracted a lot of traffic to it (835 viewers). I would not consider this my best work.

4th at 50 views- shot of wet, fallen and angry eagle which I like

I like your photos. But I agree with you that you really need to prune it. That's what happened to my Flickr account, too. Too many trip photos mixed with serious photos, so the quality is uneven.

I went to your gallery and try to set everything straight (try to click on good photos) but yikes, too many photos! Maybe you could put them into albums, like landscape, cars, architecture, etc., because I am not very interested in viewing those home photos (though they're very well shot).

Besides the thumbnail thing, I think people don't like blue sky.... If the sky has unusual color, people will click on it more. I like blue sky..., and I like trees, like the ones in your photos, but most don't. When I read people say things like "You make trees look beautiful" I know they aren't really into trees.... I do think if you give your trees a little more favorable light (especially the ones in the foreground), people might like them more.

People also don't like dimly lit photos, even if it's the correct exposure, so I also PP my photos to be more Nikon-like (1 stop over exposed).

Just some observation from my Flickr experience. Maybe they're helpful, maybe not....

I think the slideshow view here in DPR should let people click on the smaller photo and go direct into that photo's page, so I can comment on it.

I agree, blue skies are quite boring but not sure it has anything to do with the number of clicks. For example none of these two are my best images, not even if you look in the gallery, yet the first one received 105 clicks...

...and the second one 69 yet it is only a quick test image.

People also don't like dimly lit photos, even if it's the correct exposure, so I also PP my photos to be more Nikon-like (1 stop over exposed).

Never heard about this one... I mean, could you generally say Nikon images are +1 overexposed? I could definitely not say so by looking at my own images...

http://www.dpreview.com/members/1336313410/challenges

Anyway, some of my dimly lit images received more clicks than the bright nice ones, yet some bright ones with blue sky also gets higher hits, so I don't think there is any logic in how people select which image to click on.

88 hits:

72 hits and blue sky:

Just some observation from my Flickr experience. Maybe they're helpful, maybe not....

I don't have a Flickr account, but I don't think DPR clicks reflect the same thinking. I am convinced that on DPR it is more of a random which image gets higher clicks and that those who come here for the images are mostly around the challenges, not the galleries. If you look at my challenge collection from last year (I try to keep only one year's entries) the situation is different with several hundred clicks on some images and in most of them always above 100. However, even there it is difficult to see any logic.

I think the slideshow view here in DPR should let people click on the smaller photo and go direct into that photo's page, so I can comment on it.
