First time I have got the e-mail that we all wait for, you have got first place. But my to surprise it was roughly the same e-mail as I got when I came 2130 in the Tamron comp,

OOoooo crap is that it.-------------------------------------------

Please don't think me ungrateful, but how about a small certificate for First, Second and Third spots. You can still e-mail it to us and it will be something tangible that one can hold.
Many thanks.

It's a free internet photochallenge.

You're competing against people with no identity, and voted by people who ranged from 8 yo skool kids, to young unemployed-by-choice Greeks and Portugese people in 'austere' Europe, rednecks in Texas, and part time amatuer porn-stars (not that there's anything wrong with that... I think he and his girlfriends are very cool) cum freelance photographer in Toronto.

.....and you want a certificate?

I suggest you drop your mailing address to DP's Simon through an email.
I'm sure they might give you a reply in about 24 months time.
That should be enough time for you to calm down and think rationally.

You must have passed the word Congratulations in the mail.

Congratulations! Your photo well done and nice. You may feel better now.

It's not all about being the 1st one. Sometimes it is better to be the 5th or the 17th in a strong competition.

I hear what you are saying, but why do they go to the trouble of awarding place's then and send out an e-mail. surely a well done, print this and stick it on your wall is only going to create a little more enthusiasm among members.
Go on tell me that all the cheats will print there own.

Exactly.

I'd like to add that IMO, this challenge thing is JUST for the amusement of the participants.

Just like a sandbox for eager little kittens to play in.

Just a wall for you to practice your tennis topspin shots... don't for a minute think you've qualified for the Tennis' French Open Boys draw....

You can freely stick my congratulation on your wall. It has the same goodwill value as a sticker from dpr.

Well, I disagree with the general sentiment most of the replies here. And I really don't think those replies needed sarcasm and snide remarks. The tone could have easlily been more mannerly and still conveyed the same idea.

To agree with the OP, yes, it's not a huge photo contest. It doesn't involve money or a scholarship. Actually, nothing more than bragging rights.

Oddly enough, for something that--in this thread--has been classified as nearly meaningless, this forum is full of posts and threads clamoring to have something done about the sad state of challenges here at DPR. How can it be so important to have programmers spend hours and hours revising the system so the results are more meaningful and trustworthy yet scoff at someone who asked for little more than a digital accolade for finishing in the top three because the challenges are meaningless? It's a small task to accomplish--a bit of a design, some logice to see what kind of email to send to out based on ranking and that's about it! I think it would be a nice touch.

If it merits a huge number of staff hours to make it better, then I don't see anything wrong with a slightly better email for finishing in the top three.

Congrats to the OP.

... and congrats to you, Slynky, for a balanced comment. I was tempted to react here but couldn't trust myself to do it as politely as you did. The way some people express their sorry lack of knowlege and tolerance is all too tempting, but it's not my job to supply missing parts of anyone's upbringing.

Dear RA,

My suggestion is, take a screenshot of your entry getting number one.
Post it on your website/social networking site with a hyperlink to your entry.

(I don't think it's illegal or infringing on DP's rights as you earned no money from winning the entry. I doubt DPreview will force you to take it down.)

Winning is pretty much meaningless and worthless . . . . of course some people try to leverage a win by bragging about it on their site/FBpage/etc . . . but it is pretty much meaningless all the same.

This doesn't mean that it shouldn't be executed fairly and equitably . . . Hosts spend their time, Entrants spend their time . . . it MUST be a fair process to all concerned . . . .

Now that the OP has a 1st place it might get into the Challenge of Challenges and might even win . . . there might be a small prize for that.

While I agree with you and an E-certificate would be easy enough to do I have concerns for anything that might encourage more cheating. Just think of all the people on the cheating fence that would cross over for that E-Doc.

Too bad really as it would be free and easy.

RA,

There is no certificate needed for the "accomplishment" of winning first place, even if this is just the DPR challenges. Personally I am happy when I place well AND I reward myself with some new camera gear/toy, to represent the win.

Now lately my plan is to print my first place winnings in my mancave. So it is a representation of winning a challenge.

You must gauge it well though, make sure that you had a clean win (no sandbaggers that may have influenced the entries). And make sure the reward gets better if there are more than 100 entries.

Congratulations.

Probably the best gift is the gift of confidence that "somehow" you are getting there.

As earlier mentioned, my main goal is to get into National Geographics even if its just the daily dozen.

Norberto

All good stuff.

I like the concept but don't have a man cave. Maybe the office will do. If I could buy a new lens every time I won I'd enter a lot more challenges...
