Thoughts and pics from FZ150

Well I've had a couple weeks to spend with this camera and my impressions are very positive. I still have much more to learn to use it more effectively but I'm already getting shots that I am happy with. This camera is very capable and I feel like I can, at least, get a decent shot in any situation even if they are not all pixel-perfect. Being able to shoot in raw is great to really get the most out of the images but I also feel that the jpegs are perfectly fine for things like burst shooting. In another post I made some negative comments about the viewfinder and using some of the buttons and menu selections but none of these things are preventing me from getting the shots I want which is really the most important thing. Except for maybe the zoom speed being slower than manual zoom. I understand the positive things about a smooth electronic zoom, however, so I am learning to adjust to it and just slow down a bit when shooting. Because the FZ150 feels and acts like a DSLR in many ways it is still a P&S, albeit a very advanced one. I'm learning to be a little more methodical in shooting with this camera instead of trying to shoot everything I see in a hurried fashion just because it is a 'do-it-all' type of camera.
One question I have that is puzzling me is what does the menu setting 'Play on LCD' do? I can't see that it does anything on my camera whether it is 'On' or 'Off'. I thought it should show a review shot on the rear LCD even when you are using the EVF but it doesn't. I sure wish it would because that would be very convenient. Maybe that feature is broken on my camera.
I'm using this camera much like I do my DSLR normally in the PASM modes and in raw so I don't have much to say about the other Intelligent modes or video but I'm sure they work just fine especially in adding a lot of convenience and versatility to the camera. It's a camera that virtually anyone can use to get nice shots.
I'll finish by saying that I am so glad I am not a pro photographer because with this camera I can just enjoy shooting and getting every kind of picture I want without worrying whether it is perfect at an absolute pixel level. The beauty of what I have discovered though is that most shots I take with the FZ150 shot in raw with a little PP can hold up well in almost any application. So as you can tell I am very happy with this camera.
Here's a few randow shots:
Couldn't agree with you more. My FZ150 is waiting to be used in some more proper settings.
Nice photos. Love the 12fps burst shot and the 'path' shots.
Have you ever considered doing more shots either lower to ground level or in some more dynamic angles? I think that might make your 'path' and animal shots more interesting (like DSC05087-bw in your galllery). It's something I have to remind myself as well.
The Advanced FZ150 manual states:
"The LCD monitor is turned on when switching from Recording Mode to Playback Mode. You can save the time it would take to switch the display to the LCD monitor even when using the Viewfinder to record."
I agree with you that the photos could be more dynamic. Some of my favorite shots, including the one you commented on, was taken with my Sony F707 with the swivel body that encouraged creative shooting. Even though the swivel feature only worked in a horizontal orientation I was still always on the lookout for the more interesting angles because of the live preview. Some of that creativity was lost when I started using my DSLR because it lacked live preview. I was happy that many of the shots became technically better but I noticed that they also started to lack some of the creativity that I like so much. The rotating screen was a big deciding factor in purchasing the FZ150. Once again I have a camera that can take shots at any angle I want and now, for the first time, I can finally take a picture at any zoom range I want. I simply haven't gotten used to the rotating LCD screen yet but when I do I think my shots will improve and I will be sure to post the shots in my gallery.
BTW, I actually used the 5fps with autofocus and the 1Area focus. Either AF Tracking or 23-Area may have been better because it re-focussed on the background in a couple of shots. I still have a lot of experimenting to do with the burst modes but I can see that it can work very well with the right settings.
I read that definition of 'Play on LCD' from the manual but I just don't understand it. I guess I need a real elementary explanation
Tim I did buy the printed version of the CD manual off of e-bay and it is nice to have. With the printed manual you can search for a setting and sometimes still not understand what they are saying and it's right there on paper. I have just switched the Play on LCD on and off and I must be missing something as well.
If I take an image using the EVF and hit play it switches to the LCD to display with the setting on or off. I thought maybe the review mode might affect playback but no. I am approaching the camera one aspect at a time. Each week I prepare to tackle what aspect of the camera I will work on over the weekend. Using this forum is really like being in class without the bad conduct comments from my various uptight teachers. Posting my images and getting feedback from all the wonderful members of this forum is a great way to learn. Some things I probably won't get but I am just going enjoy what I think are wonderful images from this great camera. When I look at the images I've posted between last week and this week I can't believe I am taking the pictures. The most important thing for me is by having this camera I am out the door at 6 AM Sat and Sun enjoying sunrises and birds and I might get a good picture. If you figure out the setting, post.
looks like Mt. Hood
Actually it is Mt. Rainier taken from Kent, Wa. but you were close. I never get tired of taking shots of it.
To Lil G, it's a great idea to take things in small steps learning one thing at a time. It's good to hear you are having so much fun with your camera, I'm sure loving mine. If I learn what 'Play on LCD' does I will be sure to post it here. And if anyone else has a clue please chime in, thanks.
