How does the Leica 14-50 f2.8 compare to.....

...the Olympus 12-60mm. I have the 12-60 and was wondering if the Leica lens was worth buying. I can't believe that the Leica would focus any faster on my E30. but what about image quality?

Do a search. The leica is very close in performance to the 14-54. 14-54 has weather sealing where at the 14-50 has OIS. I don't think either of them is as good as the 12-60 plus the 12-60 has more range.

Many have compared the Zuiko 14-54 with the 12-60, and from all i have read "put together" most have found them to be so close it would be fair to say they are equal IQ wise. But the 12-60 with its SWD focuses a lot faster (in good light, a bit less superior in weak light)

(Some have found 12-60 to be a bit better, although not the vast majority of comparisions I have stumbled upon)

Myself I have only tried and used the 14-54 (II) of these three (14-54/12-60/Leica 14-50) but I have seen one or two comparisions including the Leica, and it´s been found equal or a very slight bit better than the 14-54. (I own the ZD 14-54 II fwiw)

I think it would be fair to say all these are firmly on the uppermost echelon. Some things may differentiate them from each other, but they do have much more in common, at least if talking strictly about IQ.

Here you go:

Note that the Leica was tested on an E-510, which is slightly sharper than the E-3 that was used for testing the 14-54 and 12-60.

Don't bother.....

You would be adding a lens of considerably lesser range that is only 3 ounces lighter and 1/2 an inch or so smaller, whose optical construction is actually quite similar and whose performance is certainly no better. (Both have their quirks: the 12-60 some subtle but complex and difficult to correct for distortion around 12mm, that the DPR review noted, the Leica the chromatic aberration around 14mm.

At the prices they usually go for, the only reasons to get one would be if you really preferred the bouquet and other subtle imaging characteristics of the Leica or if you need the lens-based optical image stabilization for, say the E-1.

Also - decisive for me - there is no weather sealing.
