Yellow Cast - how do I remove?
May 5, 2012

I wonder if one of you photoshop masters would please assist me with this? I have a few photos like this one that all have a very yellow cast to them. They are over 30 years old, so not sure if the prints were originally like this, or if they have faded in time. I guess much of the colour information has been lost, but I'd like to recover as much as possible. I got a much improved result, by adjusting the curves, using the black point of the mothers hair, the white point from clothing, and the grey from the bed frame..... but its still not great...
What method would you use to tackle this? Would really appreciate some help.

Sometimes it's better to remove all the color...

The image is very low resolution but if you have Photoshop go the Adjustment Layer -- Levels and in each RGB channel move the left and right sliders to where the histogram starts. You will also have to lighten the image as the exposure is way off.
Hope this helps

a quickie, done in Lab mode, but I guess you'll get better results colorizing this picture. The colors have all gone brownish...

Hi,

My go using CaptureNX.
1. Curves on each channel
2. LCH - upped the Master Lightnesss and moved the Hue line slightly up
3. Noise Reduction - entire image
4. Neutral Control Pont on the bed frame
5. Various Colour Control points to saturate certain parts of image
6. Noise Reduction - selected parts of image - mostly on skin

Cheers

Started with white/gray/black droppers in curves then numerous Average blur layers due to the multi-casts. In each case, added back with masks. Painting on layers in colour mode and Chip's PWL added colour and contrast. I then experimented with gradient overlay and texture layers in various blend modes and again, added each in with masks. To age and blend the noise, pattern layers in soft light.

Wow! I'm amazed with how much detail you guys have managed to extract from the photo. I've got a bit closer to your efforts, but still can't get the blue in the shawl to come out. I just realised I uploaded a very low res version of the pic.. I've attached a better one. Thank you very much to everyone that has given me some help. I keep learning, but finding this one quite hard.

Sorry, that last post is the low quality and the high quality scan, rather than my attempt at fixing it

Well Gary, you set the bar so high, that I would guess this thread is now done. Excellent work. I thought I had gotten good results until I saw yours.

Still requires some work (like more de-noise, brightness...)
