HX9V; How to take a photo while video'ing ?
May 5, 2012

I hate when machines make me feel dumb.

The 31 pages (English) PDF doesn't seem to mention that the camera can take a photo while videotaping; from googling it appears that people can. I can't.

My question: How do I take a photo while video'ing?
I was assuming I would use the shutter-actuation button.
My screen continually shows (what I think) is the 'no photo icon.'

It's also unclear what the difference between taking a video while the dial is in the video position vs. not in the video position. I've tried iA and video position, and my sample movies (in similar lighting) seemed to turn out identically.

This is why
When movies are recorded in [AVC HD 28M (PS)] quality, you cannot use [Dual Rec]

Is this documented somewhere?
Including what mode(s) will allow me to take a photo while recording?

Yes on the Sony website in the cyber-shot manual. I believe you can dual record in all other modes except PS (28m)
just try it

You have your video mode set to PS, which is 60p. The dual-record feature won't work unless you shift to the FS mode or 60i. Then, after the video is rolling, press the shutter button for photos.

Since I always use 60p for the superior way it handles motion, dual-recording is not something I do. In fact, on the HX9V, the amount of encoding bits that are given to these photos is relatively small and they aren't of the same quality that regularly-taken photos should have.
