Hi, how were these processed - RAW or jpeg and did you apply any NR?
Thanks

Hi Mike,

These were shot entirely on JPEG with NR @ 6400 set to level 1 (custom NR for high ISO).

I further added some color noise reduction (+12) in Lr4. I retained the luminance noise, as I like the grainy look.

Regards,
Wesley

the uniform graininess in the 100% view of the chair is indeed pleasing to look at.

The first pic is not a plus point for the camera, but the other are on K-5 level.

Hello Wesley Wong

The K01 have for sure a nice ISO 6400...like the K5, .... but could it be that your pictures are all croped ?

I mean, the noise in the first picture is a little too much for a ISO 6400, therefore, and because the 100% view have effect only a 'small' magnification view, I think the first picture is for example already a big crop.

The images are not cropped, but viewed at different level of pixel dimensions. First let's understand that noise is more apparent on shadow areas than highlight. Also, it also lurks in the blue channel. Anything within shadow/blue has more tendency to induce sensor noise.

The 100% of the image shows the 'up, close and personal' view of the characteristic of the noise. It's definitely more luminance than color. Pentax engineers has done a great job in this aspect.

I like luminance noise. Color noise, these days can easily be eradicated in post processing too. Luminance noise adds character to the image, especially in black and white work.

Personally, I hardly ever shoot in such high ISO6400 as I'm a lavish flash user. This is just an illustration of how well the K-01 handles noise at such level.

Regards,
Wesley

Thank you for showing your results, the highest ISO i've tried on my K-01 is ISO 2000.

I regularly use it at ISO 1000 to 1250 and i like the results.

Looks very very good.

I'd love to see what comes out of this in RAW and a good NR software like Topaz Denoise!

PS. based on what I've seen to date it looks as though the K-01 is resolving slightly more detail than the K-5. Which is very encouraging for us hopefuls out there waiting on a K-5 replacement

Thanks for your kind comment.

I think the K-01 uses a weaker AA filter, hence increasing pixel sharpness. If only they take it out completely....it will be heaven!! We can easily deal with any moire, if any.

Uh, sorry, but moire is not always easily dealt with. AA filters have a bad reputation around here, but they do serve a useful purpose. Moreover, the blurring effect they introduce can largely be removed by deconvolution sharpening.

Hello Wesley Wong

The images are not cropped, but viewed at different level of pixel dimensions. First let's understand that noise is more apparent on shadow areas than highlight. Also, it also lurks in the blue channel. Anything within shadow/blue has more tendency to induce sensor noise.

I made pictures with my K5 in a theater. It was a ballet performance. The illumination was partial with blue, red and green light-spots.

Now I don't belive that the K5 is different to the K-01. Therefor I wonder about how 'big' the noise looks like in your first picture, and this in all colour channels.
I read that you used a JPG. Now I would realy try out a RAW file for compare.
I'm sure, that would result in a much more impressive result.

It's not that I mean the JPG looks bad, it's only that if you do later PP a high ISO JPG picture, it can never be so good as if you PP a high ISO RAW file.

I can not post a picture where you can see the dancers, so here a shaddow picture:

K5 / ISO 8000

With respect, Rob, deconvolution sharpening can restore the illusion of the lost sharpness, but the image will still not be as sharp as it would be without the AA filttration. Lost information can only be estimated, not restored. At least IMHO...
