G'morning Ashwin.
My goodness, you are up late.
It seems the first 3 shots have a bit of nervous bokeh for my taste.
But then, it's only My taste.

Were these done on the M9 or Fuji?

Sorry, my bad, wasn't paying attention. It's late here.
But having said that, the bokeh still looks a bit nervous.
Is it just me?

Hi Bruce, I think it's a matter of taste, combined with focal length and OOF properties. The Noct exhbitis similar characteristics, but yes, at times, the SLR magic can get a bit nervous...The biggest offender is the 35 lux FLE, but I love that lens, and really am digging this lens for its characteristic rendering...

Great stuff, Ashwin! I think we have established by now that this is a serious competitor to the Noctilux. Just one correction: it's T0.95, not f/0.95!

Can I put you on a spot, at least for now? If you had to choose between the Noct and this SLR for the next month to use exclusively, which would it be?

I don't know....
In reply to ashwinrao1, May 4, 2012

I'm not really liking it that much.
DOF is shallow, but the rendering looks
like a very old Zeiss lens from the 30s

Ashwin how about a Noct vs HyperPrime shootout to see how the bokeh of the two compare under the same situations?

Great post as always!

Great question. Several things factor in

1. Price: $10,995 for the Noct vs $4300 for the SLR Magic
2. Minimal Focus distance: 1m for the Noct, 0.7 m for the Hyperprime
3. Size and weight: In favor of the smaller Noctilux

4. OOF character....different...but not terribly different. I actually find both very enjoyable
5. Brand: Leica vs SLR Magic
6. Build: Comparable. The SLR magic may be even better built. It's close
7. Vignetting and barrel distortion: Favor the Noctilux

If cost were no issue, I would probably still want the Noct f0.95 in my bag, but that being said, there would be times where I'd much rather have the hyperprime. I find it's OOF more interesting. Close focus is a benefit.

The bottom line to me, is that the lenses perform comparably, and Noctilux f/0.95 lenses are hard to get. That taken into account, the Hyperprime is a FAR better deal.

I always take caution in choosing a favorite, but the Hyperprime is the better deal, and performance is close, if not better in some circumstances, than its far more expensive cousin.

probably my fault more than the lens...
In reply to snowboarder, May 4, 2012

OOF is a bit more "nervous" than more corrected M leica glass, but it isn't dramatic. There is a more classic look to the images

it's a great idea to do side by side comparisons, with multiple cameras, in different light

Ashwin, I am sure somebody asked this question somewhere, so for being redundant I apologize

What is your impression about this lens compared to Noctilux f/0.95 and the last version of Noctilux f/1?
