Track side portraits with D 800E
May 4, 2012

I´ve been testing the AF and the potential moiré problem with the D 800E at a running contest. All I can say the AF is extremely good (most pictures were taken with other AF points than the center one...) and I am not "afraid" of the moié anymore... Here are some portraits... All with 300/2,8 VR wide open 320-800 ISO

Other pictures with all EXIF info are here: http://www.pbase.com/ilsmag/nikon_d3s&page=all

Wow. Gotta say - very impressive! The file size is a bit off putting, but there is no denying the image quality. How did you take the photos? Handheld or tripod?

Not exactly flattering shots, but looks like the focus works well! Very sharp, very detailed.

as far as detail, yes, lots of detail.

but that much detail on humans exerting themselves is a bit ugly, IMHO.

Thank you for the comment! I do not think that any of them are ugly. I do not know how I am while I´m playing tennis... I probably am having awful expressions too...lol...

Hi,

I was tending toward the E but was not sure. Your pictures just convinced me. If there is no moire and artifacts on these Shirts then I am pretty sure that the problem will be very minor.

Kind regards,
timur

Hi Timur, I had the very same concern as you have now and I was in doubt what to choose... When I get an unexpected call from my camera dealer I thought I will give it a try... No regrets here! I made more than 2400 clicks till now and with this portrait trial I tried to push the camera into the "moiré problem" but I have´t got any...lol... I am very glad that I went for the E instead of my planned 800... Have a nice day!

Apparently both porn producers and the TV news had this same problem when they went to HD.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go scrub my brain.
